[name]How[/name] do you feel about name themes? Would you use really obvious ones ex: [name]Abigail[/name], [name]Brittney[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Dorothy[/name] (alphabetical order) or would you use a less obvious one ex: [name]Amelia[/name], [name]Annabeth[/name], [name]Tess[/name], [name]Stephanie[/name] (use last letter as first)? I feel like I would probably use a less obvious name theme as middle names ex: [name]Emily[/name] [name]Colette[/name], [name]Isabella[/name] [name]Felicity[/name], [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Tatiana[/name] (saint names.) Because I like the idea but probably wouldn’t have the guts to use a name theme.
It depends on the theme. I don’t like really obvious ones, like using one letter a la the Duggars, but subtle ones like origins or meanings can actually be really nice.
I like some.
I like the less-typical botanicals, say: sister [name]Ivy[/name] & brother [name]Heath[/name]. Or floral meanings in other languages, like [name]Shoshana[/name], [name]Jacinta[/name], & [name]Oren[/name].
But I wouldn’t do [name]Rose[/name], [name]Lily[/name], and [name]Violet[/name] as a set of FNs, though I like each individually. I think they’d get too many comments and feel made a spectacle of. It’d have to be at least halfway subtle, perhaps [name]Veronica[/name], [name]Jessamine[/name], and [name]Bryony[/name]?
It depends on the theme. I like a less subtle connection between each name or combo. I’m using one Greek name in each combo because that is my heritage and culture and religion so every combo gets a Greek name. So for me: [name]Quillon[/name] (middle), [name]Alexander[/name] (first), Lykaion (middle), [name]Persephone[/name] (first), [name]Elysia[/name] (middle), etc…
If it were like this as all first names – [name]Athena[/name], [name]Artemis[/name], [name]Hera[/name] and brothers, [name]Hermes[/name], [name]Zeus[/name] and [name]Apollo[/name], I would roll my eyes. That’s too much. And it becomes way too much with twins when they were already twins in myth – [name]Artemis[/name] and [name]Apollo[/name], [name]Romulus[/name] and [name]Remus[/name] etc…
That’s just my one example. I feel the same about flowers/nature or any other themes. Subtle is better [name]IMO[/name].
I don’t like the all have the same letter like my cousins: [name]Stefanie[/name], [name]Sumer[/name], [name]Sidni[/name], and [name]Samantha[/name]. That’s too obvious. I also don’t like when they are super matchy like my sister in law’s kids [name]Nora[/name] and [name]Nina[/name]. I like subtle as well, like [name]Luna[/name] and [name]Flora[/name], which would be what I would name twin girls if I had them.
I like all themes, even the painfully obvious ones. I’m a sucker for corny. I would love to meet a family consisting of [name]Violet[/name], [name]Lily[/name], [name]Daisy[/name], and [name]Cade[/name]. Call me crazy! (My husband does. He thinks themes are kind of silly.)
I don’t have an issue with themes on principle, but when people get complain-y while looking for something to ‘fit’ and feel like they have to use a name they don’t like just to keep up with a theme, it grates on my nerves and I don’t reply to those threads, lol.
I think being obsessive about patterns or themes when it’s really just a coincidence is very limiting. I don’t think having a [name]Rose[/name] and an [name]Ivy[/name] means you need to use another botanical name. [name]Eden[/name] or [name]Claire[/name] or [name]Anna[/name] would go just as well.
I guess my problem is not with themes but with limiting yourself on purpose.
If it’s subtle then I usually like it a lot
I kind of like themes, but not the super obvious ones like using same initial, same ending, or going all out with historical siblings, couples or gods. [name]Athena[/name] and [name]Apollo[/name], [name]Romeo[/name] and [name]Juliet[/name], [name]Thor[/name], [name]Odin[/name], [name]Freya[/name] and [name]Loki[/name]…
All the children having alliterative names would be fine, [name]Larkin[/name] [name]Louis[/name], [name]Rufus[/name] [name]Roman[/name] and [name]Isadora[/name] [name]Iris[/name] would be sweet together and the theme would only be obvious to those who need to know the middle names of all the children.
Months or weekdays would be a little tacky, but nature names can be really nice, especially if you choose some of the more unusual ones. Or virtue names. I adore virtue names, siblings [name]Constance[/name], [name]Amity[/name], Valuor and [name]Loyal[/name] would be wonderful.
I guess you make your own rules and limits. Some themes would be anything but okay for me, others I would love.
I love subtle themes, but hate obvious ones! Themes in middle names, for instance, are wonderful. I love the alliterative suggestion, but Duggar-style naming is awful.
I’m considering giving each child a virtue name (but not all as fns!), with quite a loose interpretation of virtue, or maybe one name from literature or in honour of a historical . Another idea we’ve had is to give unusual names with more familiar nns: [name]Annora[/name] nn [name]Annie[/name] and [name]Edmund[/name] nn [name]Eddie[/name], possibly with siblings [name]Wilford[/name]/[name]Wilbur[/name] nn [name]Will[/name], [name]Samson[/name] nn [name]Sam[/name] and [name]Elspeth[/name] nn [name]Elle[/name]. Not sure if that’s too obvious though?
I think they’re fine. I wouldn’t want to lock myself into a theme though personally cause it’s hard enough to find something I love & my husband loves without considering if it fits our theme too!
If a theme is carried out in a subtle or “flowy” manner, then I don’t mind it. I’m not one to go out of my way to theme names in any particular way, but the obvious ones drive me nuts. (i.e. Duggar-esque naming, sibsets that sound more like a deity roster, twins with names that are one letter away from each other, etc.)
Alliteration is a bit of a grey area for me. Having names start with the same letter isn’t too bad (i.e. [name]Lawrence[/name] [name]Louis[/name]), but when they start with the same syllable or have the same “rhythm” - phonetically speaking, anyway - it starts sounding silly. (i.e. say [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Amalia[/name] aloud… doesn’t that sound silly?)
I like themes if they are subtle. So saint mn’s, names with a similar origin, Elizabethian-area names, nature (like [name]Hyacinth[/name], and [name]Mirabel[/name]), would all be to my liking.
