I think it’s cute as a nickname. My grandma’s name is [name_f]Antoinette[/name_f] nn [name_f]Toni[/name_f], and Noni would be a cute alternative. Maybe a little cutesy for an adult though.
Noni is interesting enough to be distinct but close enough in sound to more common names and nicknames (like [name_f]Toni[/name_f], [name_f]Nina[/name_f]) that it doesn’t sound too “out there”.
My main association is a character named Noni in one of my favourite book series, The Spoils of Time, in 1930s-50s [name_f]England[/name_f]. The character’s full name was Oenone but always called Noni.
I’m not sure about using Noni on its own, but it would be a nice nickname for [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], [name_f]Zenobia[/name_f], [name_f]Nova[/name_f], or [name_f]Noelle[/name_f]/[name_f]Noella[/name_f].
I quite like it. There’s an actor named Noni Hazlehurst (short for [name_f]Leonie[/name_f]) who’s fairly well-known here, and she’s my primary association with the name. She’s a respected actor who also hosted a popular children’s show, so I perceive the name as approachable but also suitable for a professional, competent woman (especially as a nickname).
My second association is Noni fruit. I’ve never tried it, so I don’t know whether that’s a pleasant association or not.
Noni Hazlehurst (as above), Noni B (Australian fashion brand), the similarity to ‘yoni’ and the feeling of dated-ness are what first came to my mind. Honestly, I’m not a big fan of the name and find it insubstantial as a full name, but it could make a cute nickname.
It doesnt feel like a full name to me.
Thank you for your time and input, dear Berries! It’s much appreciated
I like Noni, it instantly makes me think of [name_f]Nani[/name_f] from [name_f]Lilo[/name_f] & Stitch, but that’s a great association.
Names similar to Noni:
[name_f]Nova[/name_f]
[name_f]Nola[/name_f]
[name_f]Nani[/name_f]
[name_f]Nora[/name_f]
[name_f]Nona[/name_f]
I think Noni is cute as a nickname, but it doesn’t feel like a full name to me.
My first thought was [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] singing ‘hey nonny nonny’, although thinking about it I don’t mind it as No-nee (like [name_f]Nona[/name_f]) and that probably makes more sense. It’s cute, and I can sort of see it as a full name. I’d love to meet one!
my first connection was to [name_f]Nona[/name_f] from the Australian teen novel [name_f]Nona[/name_f] and me, about an indigenous australian girl called [name_f]Nona[/name_f]. Noni is cute though, however not my cup of tea
It’s very interesting.
Those of you who felt that Noni doesn’t sound like a full name and is better suited for a nickname, how does [name_f]Nonita[/name_f] sound to you?
Thank you so!
Maybe it’s only because my family is Italian, but my first thought was that it’s similar to “nonni,” the Italian word for grandma. Adding -ita just turns it into “little grandma” for me.
Associations aside, I could maybe see Noni as a cutesy nickname for [name_f]Antonia[/name_f] or something similar, but I don’t like [name_f]Nonita[/name_f] any better than Noni as a full name.
I think it’s sweet, but I prefer [name_f]Nona[/name_f], [name_f]Nina[/name_f] or [name_f]Joni[/name_f]. They’re just that bit more familiar and therefore feel a bit more substantial.
[name_f]Nonita[/name_f] isn’t particularly my style, however as a longer name for Noni it’s pretty perfect. If you like it, go for it — it’s totally wearable and nicely unusual without being weird.
Although it’s a little insubstantial for me, Noni is usable. In Australia it’s very well known because of actress Noni Hazlehurst. She is only ever known as Noni, though on looking her up I found her birth name is [name_f]Leonie[/name_f]. [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is another way to Noni as a nn.
[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t love [name_f]Nonita[/name_f], but I don’t have any issues with it. It could work just fine as a full name for Noni. I’ve seen [name_f]Nonie[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Ione[/name_f], I think it’s adorable.
