…[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] or [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] for the son of an [name_f]Emily[/name_f]? I really love both of these names for a boy, and I hate to keep them off my list because they both start with [name_f]Em[/name_f]- like my name. They’d most likely be middle names. Has anyone else given their child a name similar to their own (or do you plan to)? [name_m]How[/name_m] is it perceived by non name nerds?
If an [name_f]Emily[/name_f] had a son named [name_u]Emmett[/name_u], I wouldn’t think he was named after his mother. Same goes for [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]. If you named a daughter [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] or [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] then yes, I’d think you named a child after yourself. Honestly, I don’t think non-name nerds would even associate [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]/[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] with [name_f]Emily[/name_f].
I love the idea of it. I think that it’s a nice flip on the “junior” tradition and actress/model [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] [name_m]King[/name_m] just named her son [name_u]James[/name_u]. Why not turn your own name into a family name? I think it’s great!
I’m sure some people could put a negative spin on it and see it as an ego thing, but I think it will mostly go unnoticed, especially in the middle name spot.
I also love the idea of mom’s maiden name or a variation as a name for baby!
[name_m]Will[/name_m] and [name_f]Jada[/name_f] [name_m]Smith[/name_m] have [name_u]Jaden[/name_u] and [name_f]Willow[/name_f].
I’m in the same boat with [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] and [name_m]Emrys[/name_m]. (And [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f])
Of course, people name their kids after themselves all the time. But if that’s not what you’re going for, it feels funny. But objectively, I see no problem with having two [name_f]Em[/name_f]'s in the family when one will be called Mom most of the time. And your son might like the connection with his mum, as long as his name is distinct and more masculine.
It wouldn’t catch my attention at all unless there were a third [name_f]Em[/name_f] in the family (e.g. [name_f]Emily[/name_f], DS [name_u]Emerson[/name_u], & DD [name_f]Emmie[/name_f]/DH [name_u]Emmett[/name_u]).
GL!
Huh. So I’m getting the impression that using an [name_f]Em[/name_f]- name for a son won’t stand out or be as noticeable as I thought?
