Exactly what the title says. What are some creative ways to honor someone who doesn’t like their name?
The honor I have for my father is Ronan— not his exact name, nor a typical variant, but both are Irish, start with the same letter, and sound similar.
You could use birth month as well. I think it could also work with their favorite season / the season they were born in as well.
Some more ideas:
- Favorite color
- A name based off of a significant place in their life (where they were born, favorite place, etc)
- Favorite plant
- Favorite weather
- Favorite book
- A significant memory in their life or about your time spent together
- Birthstone
- A name that shares the same meaning as their name
- A name relating to their favorite book
- A passion / hobby they had. For instance, someone who enjoys collecting seashells could be honored with a name like Sora (meaning “conch shell”)
- Their birth symbols (month, day of the week, gemstone, flower, etc.)
- A great memory (You took a trip somewhere so choose a name to remember that)
- A variation on their name (Kai, [name_u]Kaj[/name_u], [name_f]Kaia[/name_f], [name_f]Kaja[/name_f] would all work as a international variation for Katherine)
- Their favorites (flower, a sports related name, a famous person from their favorite tv show or movie or profession or area of passion, etc.)
- A name that symbolizes them as a person or a motto they live by
- A name they love
Ask them for their favourite names? Use a name that honours something they love- their favourite book, a hobby they have etc
Something else that hasn’t been mentioned is using the initials of their first name and middle name(s). I have done this to honour a D. A. (last name) with the combination of [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u]. I think the main thing is to pick a name that reminds you of the person in some way - it doesn’t necessarily have to be intuitive, as long as it is meaningful to you
