How Do You Know? Stumped. Name List Also :)

[name]Hi[/name] all!

I am new to nameberry and a name junkie!

I have a baby girl on the way and need your help. [name]How[/name] do you know when a name is right? Did you wait to meet the baby? Or does saying it aloud long enough do the trick? Any recommendations are welcome for how to find the name.

I posted with some names and one took the cake here on nameberry but then I quickly realized it was indeed the prettiest, but too frilly for our girl. So it’s hard to know what is “right.” I like the look and sound of frilly, long, names but I can’t picture them being practical to our lives (or fitting our little girl).

A bit about my hub & I (if you’re still hanging in here at this point! :)) We are both fun-loving, creative (I work as an artist), and want a spunky name that is indeed unique but not made-up sounding or so rare that people haven’t heard it. [name]Both[/name] light-eyed and blonde-haired. Hub and I have common names and don’t want that for our girl. We also don’t want her to have a lifetime of spelling and sounding it out either! So a happy medium is good.

Now that you know us, here’s a list or feel free to list your own ideas!
what name can you picture :

[name]Sloane[/name] [name]Adelaide[/name] nn “Lo” or “lola” {this one is my favorite!}
[name]Penelope[/name] [name]Gray[/name] nn “pepper” {this was the nameberry fav that may be too frilly}
[name]Scarlett[/name] [name]Kate[/name] {like but worry about popularity of [name]Scarlett[/name] don’t want a top 100}
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Everly[/name] {we both like quinn}
[name]Finley[/name] [name]Kate[/name] {hub favorite…not so sure on it but maybe could grow on me}

Congrats on your baby girl! From your list, I like Penelope Gray nn Pepper the best. Personally, I don’t find Penelope too frilly but that’s just me. I don’t know if Pepper would be the best nn for a fair child :). Sloane, Quinn, Finley and Scarlett are all pretty trendy names which I think will rise in popularity. Of the four, I prefer Quinn. Here are some other suggestions.

As far as knowing when you’ve chosen the “perfect” name, that’s really personal and differs between individuals. Some people have loved a name since childhood and never look back. Other people choose names from their family tree to honor relatives. Some individuals stumble upon a name quite by accident (either in a book or on the web) and it grows on them. I often advise that naming your firstborn often determines the type of “style” for any future children. So maybe ask yourself what style best describes you. Just by looking at your names, you seem to have a tendency to be drawn to surname or unisex names. If you’re still not sure and your due date draws near, take a couple of names to the hospital with you and choose one after meeting the baby.

[name]Hi[/name]! I like [name]Sloane[/name] [name]Adelaide[/name] and [name]Finley[/name] [name]Kate[/name] for your fair-haired, blue-eyed little one. (I also love [name]Quinn[/name], but prefer a different mn - how about [name]Quinn[/name] [name]Adelaide[/name]?)

@[name]Mischa[/name] - WOW! Thank you for the mega list which are all awesome. I will be running by the huz tonight. You have amazing naming style! Thanks for helping.

@kyemsma - I’m with you on the middle name Seraphina… I just swapped it. Was trying to find something softer to go with the short 1st. I do like [name]Quinn[/name] [name]Adelaide[/name] too!

Of the names you listed I like [name]Sloane[/name] (not really a fan of [name]Adelaide[/name]), [name]Gray[/name] (I like it as a middle name), [name]Quinn[/name], & [name]Everly[/name]. If I had to choose one of those combinations I would go with [name]Quinn[/name] [name]Everly[/name]. [name]Both[/name] are unique names & sound pretty.

I think a big part of knowing it’s the right name is actually agreeing with your spouse. The other part of knowing it’s right is just feeling natural saying it.

I agree. I keep thinking when I hear him say it, it will just click. And if I know he loves it and we both are in agreeance… it’ll be so sweet and feel more “right”. :heart:

Guess we’ll practice saying these names… maybe that will help us to figure out if its natural to say aloud.

What about just [name]Lola[/name]? I’m not crazy about [name]Sloane[/name] (it’s just so masculine to my ears), but Lo/[name]Lola[/name] is adorable. [name]Elodie[/name] or [name]Eloise[/name]? It could be a nickname for [name]Penelope[/name], too, if you decided to go that route. [name]Quinn[/name] is bound to get very, very popular and [name]Scarlett[/name] already is, so I would avoid those. If you like [name]Pepper[/name], what about [name]Poppy[/name] or [name]Pippa[/name]? A previous poster mentioned [name]Phoebe[/name] and I think that’s a great fit for your family. [name]Eva[/name] or [name]Evie[/name] could replace the slightly trendy [name]Everly[/name]. [name]Gray[/name] is very cool, but perhaps a bit bleak for a child? [name]Adelaide[/name] is also a lovely name in the first spot! My final choice for you would be [name]Quinby[/name] (or [name]Quenby[/name]). It’s spunky and sweet like [name]Pepper[/name] and [name]Lola[/name] with that [name]Quin[/name] sound and the [name]Phoebe[/name] ending.

Whatever you choose, I do believe you will just know. Maybe not right away, but as time goes on, I think one will just feel right. It might even take meeting your child to see which one is perfect! Either way, let us know what you end up choosing and good luck!

Thank you for your feedback! I adore [name]Lola[/name] and have tried VERY hard to convince my hub that it’s cute but he wouldn’t go for it! Won’t budge. :wink: But you are right I could sneak it in with [name]Penelope[/name]. haha [name]Eloise[/name] is a family name for us that’s already been used so it is out… it is one of those names that grows on you. I prefer [name]Evie[/name] too but hub likes [name]Everly[/name] and didn’t care for [name]Evie[/name] (boo!)

I have to say, I know people are saying they see [name]Quinn[/name] getting trendy but I’m not sure I can see it. I mean Glee has been out for awhile with the beautiful [name]Dianna[/name] Agron carrying the character’s name as well as [name]Quinn[/name] on [name]One[/name] Tree [name]Hill[/name], yet it still ranks as #253 while [name]Penelope[/name] is closer to the top than it. But you never know I guess it could crawl a bit! I for sure think [name]Scarlett[/name] will… it fits right in line with the feminine trend of [name]Emma[/name], [name]Violet[/name], [name]Isabella[/name], etc.
