I pronounce it “ez-may”. Very soft and pretty name.
I meant to make the options “ez-[name]May[/name]” and “ez-Mee” but then couldn’t go back and correct the poll
Ez-may But only after I googled it a week ago, haha!
I wonder what part of the world people who say ez-mee are in… Is it the common pn in some places?
I say ez-[name]May[/name], and I’m from Southern Oregon. I think I recall seeing a British TV-show with a main character named [name]Esme[/name], and they said ez-Mee. It’s a really pretty name though.
I drift back and forth between the two. There’s a little girl in my online mom’s group named [name]Esme[/name] [name]Mirielle[/name] so I read the name on a daily basis. Sometimes I say Es-may, others it’s Es-mee.
I live in [name]California[/name], and I would personally say es-me. However, I have heard it both ways.
I voted es-[name]MAY[/name] because I know that’s the proper pronunciation… I absolutely adore ez-MEE though, and if I could get that pronunciation I would probably go for it! It just sounds so much sweeter and natural to me, but I wouldn’t really want to give my daughter a name where I purposely used the wrong pronunciation… Either way it’s a lovely name!
I say it EZ-may, with the accent on the first syllable, though I’ve heard it EZ-mee as well. I prefer the EZ-may pronunciation, personally.
It has always been EZ-may to me.
I live in Australia and pronounce it EZ-may
I’ve considered [name]Esme[/name] for my youngest daughter. I think [name]Esme[/name] is beautiful pronounced either way, but since Ez-may is the right pronunciation, I would pronounce it Ez-may. Good luck!
I am glad to see more votes for ez-may, as that is the pn that I love and would want. And I too put the emphasis on the first syllable
Thanks for the responses! Very helpful!
EZ-may. EZ-mee sounds like a mispronunciation.
Neither. I say it as EZ-may, which emphasis on the first syllable.
Definitely Ez-[name]MAY[/name], it is a beautiful name. Saying it Ez-MEE sounds wrong to me, I had my mother in law pronounce it Ez-MEE a Week ago whilst talking about names, first time I had heard anyone say it that way! [name]Esme[/name] is a gorgeous name
I love [name]Esme[/name] (= I know lots of Esmes in the UK, all pronounce it ‘Ez-may’.
I’ve never heard of either of those pronunciations, although I have ran into a couple of people who say ‘ess-mee’ which is wrong, quite frankly.
My in-laws live in [name]England[/name] and they SWEAR by Es-mee, which sounds all kinds of WRONG to my ears, so we can’t use it. I don’t want to have that argument over and over (already had it with the husband a hundred times)…
There is an [name]Esme[/name] (es-mee) on his side of the family, so apparently, first come, first pronounced!!!
