How do you pronounce Auberon?

I love the boys name Auberon and am strongly considering it as a middle name. However, I think I might be pronouncing it differently? To me it’s a more attractive-looking version of Oberon, and I pronounce it Oh-bur-on. My husband thinks it looks like Aw-bur-on. What do you think and how do you pronounce it? Would it be weird to use Auberon and pronounce it Oberon? Or is it not so much an issue since it’s a middle name and wouldn’t be used much? Thanks for any comments and thoughts!!

I pronounce it aw-ber-on, like the Au in all Au- names ([name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] for example). I wouldn’t use [name_u]Auberon[/name_u] if you want the pronunciation [name_u]Oberon[/name_u], and just use that, but it shouldn’t matter so much in the MN spot.

All the Auberons I know say AW-buh-ruhn, so it might take correcting people to get the [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] pronunciation, but it’s not infeasible. Good luck!

You are pronouncing it correctly, as far as I’m concerned. I thought it was the French variant of Oberon…

Edit: Although N.B. I’ve never met anyone named Auberon.

Yeah, when I see it, I think [name_m]French[/name_m] and pronounce it O-. I like sound of [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] but not so much the spelling, and vice-versa with [name_u]Auberon[/name_u].

Then again, my name is [name_f]Auriel[/name_f], pronounced Aw-ree-[name_f]EL[/name_f], but everyone looks at it and says [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] ([name_f]AIR[/name_f]-ee-yel). So yeah…

Its pronouned Aw-ber-ron. Like [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u]

I thought O-beron, but only because I’ve never heard the aw-beron pronunciation. People would probably pronounce it incorrectly a lot if you were going for the O sound.

O-beron. I do pronounce [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] and [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] differently but [name_u]Auberon[/name_u] is definitely O-beron to me.

I agree. O-beron definitely.

I also pronounce it Oh-ber-on, just like the [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] spelling. If the [name_u]Auberon[/name_u] spelling causes pronunciation headaches, [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] would be easier (although a lot of people seem turned-off by the “[name_m]King[/name_m] of the Fairies” connection which hardly even occurs to me). I think it goes great with your other choices.

Thanks everyone!
@greyer the [name_m]King[/name_m] of the Fairies connection doesn’t bother me at all - I love classical literature and poetry, so that’s actually part of why I like the name. I just think the Au- beginning has a nicer look to it. I never even considered the Aw- pronunciation with this name until my husband mentioned it. I kept saying [name_u]Oberon[/name_u], and he liked it, then he saw it written down and went, what?
I feel like I got about a 50/50 response, so…
I think I will keep it on my shortlist as [name_u]Auberon[/name_u], and keep saying it as [name_u]Oberon[/name_u]. It’s for a middle name anyhow, so we wouldn’t constantly be correcting people.

I say it Aw-ber-on, like [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u].

I pronounce it like you do–the [name_m]French[/name_m] way. I have a similar family surname, so it seems obvious to me.

I was under the understanding that it is pronounced with the o, just like [name_u]Oberon[/name_u]. That’s what it says on Behind the Name anyway.

I think that’s a good choice – as a middle, there’s less concern about mispronunciation.

I also would pronounce it like [name_u]Oberon[/name_u], but I suspect the average (American, at least) would be likely to pronounce its first syllable as “ah” or “ow”
