Hello,
My partner and I tend to agree on Automne. It’s the [name_m]French[/name_m] word for [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]. I would say it in [name_m]French[/name_m]: O-tone.
[name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce it?
Would I often have to correct the pronunciation?
Thank you!
I speak [name_m]French[/name_m] and live in [name_f]France[/name_f], I would say “Or-ton” with the slightest hint of an ‘e’ at the end. For me the issue would be less that people are going to say it wrong and more that they might butcher it by being too heavy handed. Automne is a lovely, delicate word, but if you live with people who are going to attempt to say it in English it might sound much heavier than it should. It’s one of those words that sounds fab in [name_m]French[/name_m] and not so fab outside of the [name_m]French[/name_m] language.
Thank you @lamantchenille! We live in [name_f]France[/name_f] for now, but we might move back to [name_u]America[/name_u] in a few years. My family is [name_m]French[/name_m], his family is American. No matter what we choose, [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] or Automne, she would have to correct people, as we travel a lot between these two countries. But that’s the only name we agree on, with Esmée.
Girl’s names are so hard!
It’s O-[name_m]Tom[/name_m]-Neh
You don’t pronounce the ‘e’ at the end
What about using one as her legal name but then calling her by whichever works better in that country? i.e. give her the legal name Automne, which is what she’d go by in [name_f]France[/name_f], but when she’s in [name_u]America[/name_u] she can go by [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]. A lot of people have a “name they’re known by” that’s slightly or completely different from their legal name; I don’t think that would be a problem. I know a lot of immigrants whose legal names are tricky for English speakers so they have an English name they go by in everyday life. I think a lot of Americans would have trouble with Automne, not sure about [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] in [name_f]France[/name_f]?
[name_m]Just[/name_m] curious, are word names popular in [name_f]France[/name_f]?
American here, and I speak no [name_m]French[/name_m]. I would certainly struggle with this name! I would guess either [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] (and assume its a creative spelling) or if someone told me it was [name_m]French[/name_m] I’d probably guess Au-tome-nay (because like I said, I’m clueless!).
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] you find the perfect name for your little girl!
I’m taking [name_m]French[/name_m], and I just started, so my pronounciation could be way off. I pronounce it as oh-tom
