How do you pronounce Berenice

I always thought this name was pronounced as [name_f]Bernice[/name_f]. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce it?

I know a [name_f]Berniece[/name_f]/[name_f]Bernice[/name_f] Her name is pronounced Ber-niece. I am not sure of the correct spelling. it is a pretty unusual name.

I would look at it and say Ber-in-eese.

EDIT: Nameberry says “Usual English pronunciation: bare-uh-NY-see”- but my original comment still stands.

I say it bear-ih-NEESE.

I say Bare-uh-neece. [name_m]French[/name_m] actress Bérénice Marlohe I presume would be pronounced more like [name_u]Bay[/name_u]-ray-neece.

Thanks guys! Anyone else?

I would say ‘Berr-uh-neese’. (Berr to be said like Behr).

I have always said it bear-uh-NEE-SEE. I believe that is also the traditional Greek pronunciation. It’s also a form of the name Veronica.

I pronounce the two names quite differently, considering how similar they look on paper:

[name_f]Bernice[/name_f] = burr-NEESE

[name_f]Berenice[/name_f] = bear-uh-NEESE

I would pronounce it bear - niece. I’m from northern [name_f]England[/name_f]

Any more opinions?

I always thought it was pronounced burr-niece, but I think I’m wrong

I’ve never heard the name [name_f]Berenice[/name_f] spoken, but in my head I’ve always heard Behr-ren-NEESSE. [name_f]Bernice[/name_f] is [name_m]Burr[/name_m]-NEESSE to me. I’m in upstate NY, if that helps.

thank you  I’m kind of leaning towards beh-reh-nee-see because it sounds less old lady like.
