How do you pronounce Chara?

[name]How[/name] is the name [name]Chara[/name] pronounced? Does anybody know? I’m getting conflicting information from several sources using google. Some say it is similar to [name]Sarah[/name] but with a Ch sound. Others say its more like HARR uh. Some say its [name]CHAR[/name] as in charcoal and then uh. Help! Does anybody know anyone with this name or heard of this that could shed some light?

No idea if this is correct, but I guessed “[name]CHAR[/name] (as in charcoal) - uh.” I’d like it a lot better if it were “SHAH-ruh,” though.

The Irish [name]Chara[/name] is pronounced “CHA-ruh”. The first syllable is pronounced like a breathy “h” in English so from your pronunciations stated, “HARR-uh” would be the closest because the “c” is silent. “[name]Mo[/name] chara” means “my friend” in Irish Gaelic. [name]Chara[/name] is also a Greek name (full name is Charalambia) and I believe it’s pronounced with the “h” sound too. I think the name has many pronunciations depending on the culture so it could be an example of “pick the one you like best”.

At a first glance I pronounce it “[name]KARA[/name]” but after looking at it again I see it as “Ch-ara” (Like your charcoal pronounciation). Personally, i prefer the “kara” pronunciation.

The only person I know with this name pronounces it shar-uh.

Thank you all…

I guess in [name]America[/name] we would pronounce it [name]CHAR[/name]-uh? or shar uh.
