How do you pronounce Cheyenne?

I believe I’ve been saying it the wrong way all my life…I looked it up today and sites say that it was pronounce SHY-enn but I’ve been saying it more like [name_u]SHAY[/name_u]-enn (or [name_u]Shea[/name_u] if you like, like [name_u]Shea[/name_u] Butter).

[name_f]My[/name_f] [name_m]French[/name_m] god-mother is called [name_u]Cheyenne[/name_u] and we’ve always said it [name_u]SHAY[/name_u]-enn.

I’m just wondering how some other people say it?

I know a [name_u]Cheyenne[/name_u] and she pronounces is shy-ann.

I say shay-EN but I’ve heard both.

I would stay clear of it, though. I think it sounds rather unclassy and I’m uncomfortable with it’s history and usage as a name.

I’ve always heard it pronounced SHY-enne, as that’s how I’ve always heard the Native American tribe to be pronounced.

I’ve always said it SHY-ann.

Shy-[name_f]Ann[/name_f] is how I’ve always heard it pronounced but that could possibly be a personal preference or regional thing.

I’ve known 2. One was [name_u]Shay[/name_u]-[name_f]Ann[/name_f] and the other pronounced it Shy-[name_f]Ann[/name_f].

I say shy-enn.

shy-AN. Name is same as the city in [name_f]Wyoming[/name_f] as well as the tribe. I’ve met a few girls all over the states with this name (as well as place names and, obviously, the tribe) and have always heard it pronounced this way.

Yep, [name_u]Cheyenne[/name_u], [name_f]Wyoming[/name_f] is pronounced shy-[name_f]ANN[/name_f] with the stress on the second syllable.

I know a [name_u]Cheyenne[/name_u] and she pronounces it shy-[name_f]ANN[/name_f]

From what I know, SHAY-enne, is incorrect. The Aboriginal tribe in North America pronounces Cheyenne as SHY-enne, however, in Southern states, it is sometimes SHY-ann.

No, you nor your god-mother are wrong. You’re just using the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation.

American: [name_f]Chey[/name_f] =‘shy’ (ex. [name_u]Cheyenne[/name_u] people ‘shy-ann’)
[name_m]French[/name_m]: [name_f]Chey[/name_f] =‘shay’ (ex. [name_u]Cheyne[/name_u] is ‘[name_u]Shane[/name_u]’ not ‘Shine’)

reba says it on that show, shiy anne

I say shy-[name_f]ANNE[/name_f]

Shy-enn or Shy-ann

I’ve only heard it pronounced shy-[name_f]ANN[/name_f].

A lot of people are writing the emphasis on the first syllable (SHY-ann or [name_u]SHAY[/name_u]-ann) but I’ve only ever heard it on the second. I’ve heard shy-[name_f]ANN[/name_f] more than shay-[name_f]ANN[/name_f], but the shay pronunciation wouldn’t surprise me, either.
