How do you pronounce;MAIA correctly?

I love the sentiment that goes with [name]Maia[/name] ie. the mother of [name]Hermes[/name] and she is nature. So is it pronounced my-aa or may-a just like the spelling [name]Maya[/name]?Also any good second and or third name suggestions for [name]Maia[/name]?Another quick question: has anyone got a name that is similar in style/meaning to [name]Maia[/name].I know [name]Gaia[/name] probably is, but I’m not very fond of that name. Many thanks.

The original Greek pronunciation (and therefore “correct” in this case) is MY-ah as /ai/ makes an ‘eye’ sound in Ancient Greek. The Sanscrit name [name]Maya[/name] is also prn this way as well. The Romans also had a figure called [name]Maia[/name] (the wife of [name]Vulcan[/name]) but I don’t know enough about Latin to say whether that version is [name]May[/name]-a or My-a.

[name]Maia[/name] [name]Penelope[/name]
[name]Maia[/name] [name]Tabitha[/name]
[name]Maia[/name] [name]Evadne[/name]
[name]Maia[/name] [name]Delphine[/name]
[name]Maia[/name] [name]Juliette[/name]
[name]Maia[/name] [name]Therese[/name]
[name]Maia[/name] [name]Francesca[/name]
[name]Maia[/name] [name]Seraphine[/name]
[name]Maia[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name]

Other similar to [name]Maia[/name] (Greek-inspired):

[name]Chara[/name] ([name]Cara[/name])

As far as i know, [name]Maia[/name] and [name]Maya[/name] are both pronounced MAH-ya (or my-a). I like the [name]Maia[/name] spelling better.

[name]Maia[/name] [name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Maia[/name] [name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Maia[/name] [name]Rosalie[/name]
[name]Maia[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name]
[name]Maia[/name] [name]Daphne[/name]
[name]Maia[/name] [name]Delphine[/name]
[name]Maia[/name] [name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Maia[/name] [name]Natalia[/name]
[name]Maia[/name] [name]Serafina[/name]

[name]Both[/name] [name]Maya[/name] and [name]Maia[/name] woud originally have been pn My- ah as the pps have said. [name]Maya[/name] is from the Sanskrit and is definitely My-ah. [name]Maia[/name], as you know was also a godess in ancient Greek culture and [name]Roman[/name] too. My elder daughter is called [name]Maia[/name]. It is a beautiful name although is does sometimes get pn wrong by people!
My [name]Maia[/name] is [name]Maia[/name] [name]Isabel[/name]. I also like the sound of [name]Maia[/name] [name]Francesca[/name], [name]Maia[/name] [name]Josephine[/name], [name]Maia[/name] [name]Juliet[/name].

thanks to everyone for your response.Looks like the correct my-a.Thanks for the info.I think [name]Maia[/name] [name]Isabel[/name] is such a pretty name mummyof3 do your other kids also have greek names?I personally love greek and Italian names the best.
