Thank you for doing this poll. I was about to post a thread on it myself!

In Iceland we say MAH-tee-as.

But the more general pronunciation in most European countries is ma-TEE-as, I think. Same basic pronunciation, different stress (in [name_m]French[/name_m] the stress would move to the last syllable, I suppose).

I say Mah-tie-us.

I’ve never heard it pronounced ma-THY-us, but I much prefer that pronunciation now. I don’t like ma-TEE-us very much.

It would seem that maybe ma-THY-us is more common in the US? I probably couldn’t use the name anyway because I have a [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] who goes by [name_f]Maddy[/name_f]. [name_m]Matthias[/name_m] would undoubtedly be called [name_m]Matt[/name_m] or [name_u]Matty[/name_u] – way too similar. But I am totally in love with this name!
