This is hypothetical, but my bf knows about my name nerdiness. And we sometimes discuss what our future kids would be named some day. We don’t agree on a lot, but we both have considered [name]Raiden[/name]. I know it’s a mostly unknown name, but I’d like to hear other people’s thoughts on that name. We pronounce it [name]RYE[/name]-den.
My bf and I discuss this name occasionally. I see it as an update on [name]Ryan[/name], which I love but is insanely popular. I knew about five of them in college, including one of my professors. I mean, it’s popular for a reason, but I would never use it bc of its popularity. [name]Raiden[/name] seems close, but the “d” seems to make a difference.
My bf likes the connections to mythology. He thinks he would be giving his kid a cool name that he would appreciate.
So what do you guys see? Are we damning our kid with the connections to Mortal Kombat? Is it too kool? Am I kidding myself on the update theory?
I don’t see the [name]RYE[/name]-den pronunciation at all, all I see is [name]RAY[/name]-den, like “raiding”. Whenever I see the name, I immediately think of “raiding the closet”, the Oakland Raiders football team, and then radon the gas.
Like pps, I would assume it’s pronounced ray-den with that spelling. I’d also avoid non-classics that end with -den because they’re tryndee now and will be dated in a few years.
I see Ray-den not, Rye-den sorry. If you want Rye-den I would spell it: Ryden
I, personally, find it to be awful as a name because it sounds like Riding, like “I’m ridin’ my horse today”, thus it sounds like a verb, which don’t usually work well as names…
I also see [name]RAY[/name]-den. [name]Aiden[/name] with an R.
Perhaps you would like [name]Braden[/name]/[name]Braiden[/name] better? Maybe even [name]Brody[/name], [name]Caden[/name], [name]Ryder[/name], [name]Ryker[/name], [name]Maverick[/name]?
I’m pretty sure that everyone will initially pronounce it [name]Ray[/name]-den, which makes it sound like an [name]Aidan[/name]-[name]Caden[/name]-[name]Jayden[/name] name. You can, of course, correct people, and many people meeting your son for the first time would be hearing his name verbally.
I don’t know whether it can be considered an update of [name]Ryan[/name], an Irish surname, since it’s a Japanese thunder god. In fact, if people know it’s a Japanese name, they will be more likely to pronounce it correctly.
I definitely don’t hear the [name]Rye[/name] either! I read it as [name]Ray[/name]-dahn. Likely due to my friend’s son’s name, [name]Zaidan[/name] which is pronunced Zay-dahn.
I was also worried about pronunciation issues, and the trendiness. I guess it’s just going to have to be yet another of my bf’s favorites that I’ll have to scratch off the list…. he says I veto all of them! Maybe I’ll let him think about it as a middle. haha!
[name]Raiden[/name] is a Japanese name and is supposed to be pronounced [name]Ry[/name]-den. I speak some Japanese so I’m positive that this is the correct pronunciation. In the Western world, people will think its [name]Ray[/name]-den because of all the [name]Aiden[/name] names.
