Well, I just typed it [name]Elliot[/name] on another list since that seems to be more well-known as you state, but in my head it’s [name]Elliott[/name] - I think the t’s look more balanced, and it’s always welded in my mind to [name]Everett[/name]. [name]Love[/name] both of those names BTW.
I think either spelling is completely acceptable ([name]Eliot[/name] looks a little odd, to me…but still not wrong per se), and in either case he’ll have to spell it - can probably say 2 l’s, 2 t’s or whatever - not like it’s Ehlyut or something : D.
I have two friendly acquaintances (adults) with this name - [name]Eliot[/name] and [name]Elliot[/name].
People I know with this surname are all [name]Elliott[/name].
Good luck!
[name]Love[/name] [name]Elliot[/name]! I prefer the two "L"s and one “T” spelling. It just looks more balanced to me, for some reason, which is odd, since it doesn’t have the two double-letter thing. [name]Elliott[/name] looks like it’s too much to me, even though I think it’s a fine name. I prefer [name]Elliot[/name], then [name]Eliot[/name], then [name]Elliott[/name], and then [name]Eliott[/name], I think… I’ve recently heard that [name]Elliot[/name] is the more “namey” choice while [name]Elliott[/name] is the more “surnamey” spelling.
Good luck!
My son’s name is [name]Elliott[/name]. He comes from a long line of Elliotts all with double "L’s and double "T’s so of course it is my favorite! I do have to admit that his name is often mispelled with only one t, but it doesn’t really cause any problems.
As PPs have mentioned, [name]Elliot[/name] is technically the first name version and [name]Elliott[/name] is the last name version. However, I prefer [name]Elliott[/name]. [name]Both[/name] are great though. I prefer either of these spellings way more than [name]Eliot[/name] or [name]Eliott[/name]. Those two seem incomplete [name]IMO[/name].
I voted [name]Elliott[/name] because BehindTheName.com lists [name]Elliot[/name] as a variant thereof. However, then I looked up [name]Jane[/name] [name]Austen[/name]'s Persuasion, and the surname of the heroine is “[name]Elliot[/name]” with one ‘t.’ Given that, and the fact that [name]Elliot[/name] is currently the more common spelling, I would change my vote to [name]Elliot[/name].
In my opinion, since ‘[name]Elliot[/name]’ is now also used on girls, it seems as if the spelling ‘[name]Elliott[/name]’ is more masculine. The girls I’ve known of to have this name = [name]Elliot[/name] or [name]Eliot[/name], but not [name]Elliott[/name].
I don’t think one is better than the other, but I do prefer [name]Elliott[/name]. It comes more naturally out of my fingers, I like a lot of -TT names, and it looks more balanced to me.
[name]Elliot[/name] is just as nice, though.
I much prefer [name]Elliott[/name]. It looks more masculine. I would avoid [name]Eliott[/name]. It’s an anagram for the word “toilet”.
This is turning out to be more complicated than I thought! It seems like there are excellent reasons to go both ways. My inclination is to go the way that most people will assume it’s spelled, but even that, I imagine, gets cloudy. I really appreciate your insight!
My personal favorite spelling is [name]Eliot[/name]. It seems all boy and no frills to me. Of those two, I definitely prefer [name]Elliot[/name]. The [name]Elliott[/name] spelling seems to be the favorite of parents with female Elliotts so I would avoid that spelling on a boy. [name]Just[/name] my opinion though
I prefer the [name]Elliot[/name] spelling but there’s definitely nothing wrong with the [name]Elliott[/name] spelling!
Also, both spellings are correct.
[name]Elliot[/name] Ness, the famous law man.
I prefer the spelling [name]Elliot[/name], it’s instinctive to me. I know people who spell it both ways you’ve listed but I see the double t version as a surname (maybe not helped by the fact I went to school with a girl with that as her surname). They’re the two most common variants so you can’t go wrong with either of them, whichever you go for you’ll probably get people misspelling it at some point or another.
I did this exact poll a few weeks ago, and also came up with exact 50/50 split between [name]Elliot[/name] and [name]Elliott[/name]. So since you have the same response, and that they are relatively the same level of popularity (I think 10 spaces apart on the SSA list?), I feel pretty confident in saying it is nothing but a matter of personal preference. I think my husband and I have decided on [name]Elliott[/name], for nothing other than that’s what seems more correct to us. Good luck, and obviously I love the name since that’s what we’ve landed on for our second son!
I spell it [name]Elliott[/name]. The names [name]Elliott[/name], [name]Emmett[/name], and [name]Everett[/name] are all on our boy list.
