How does CAF work?

Can someone please explain to me how they work? I understand the basic idea, but I’m a bit confused on how they’re formatted and what the letters mean. (DW: DS: DD: etc) If someone could tell me, I’d be really grateful.

Acronyms:
DH = Dear Husband
DW = Dear Wife
DD = Dear Daughter
DS = Dear [name_m]Son[/name_m]
DaD = Dear Adopted Daughter
DaS = Dear Adopted [name_m]Son[/name_m]
exH = ex-husband
exW = ex-wife

The format is usually the original family and then the children’s families after that, such as …

DH: [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Smith[/name_m]
DW: [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_m]Smith[/name_m]
DS: [name_m]Frank[/name_m] [name_m]Smith[/name_m]
DD: [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f] [name_m]Smith[/name_m]

DH: [name_m]Frank[/name_m] [name_m]Smith[/name_m]
DW: [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] [name_m]Smith[/name_m]
DD: [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_m]Smith[/name_m]

DH: [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] [name_m]Jones[/name_m]
DW: [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f] [name_m]Jones[/name_m] (née [name_m]Smith[/name_m])
DS: [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_m]Jones[/name_m]

Hope that answered your questions!
