How have your name tastes changed?

If you have old lists and your current faves hanging around, post em! I’m so curious as to how everyone’s tastes have changed if at all!

Since I’ve been on this forum for like 10 years, I have my old lists from the time I joined. I wouldn’t even CONSIDER most of the names I liked 10 years ago :joy:

Here’s a sample of my lists (in no particular order):

I don’t know what I’d even call my new style, but I think the style change is much more noticeable in the boy’s names!

Since joining nameberry years ago, my name tastes have expanded greatly.

I love names from many cultures, gem and rock names, tree and plant names, time names, virtue names, grandma and grandpa names…

And I still cannot bear misspellings and names that relate to real estate and cash.

I joined this site in 2012. I wish I had written down my old signatures but I was able to find some old lists in old posts.

[name_f]Elowen[/name_f]
[name_f]Maren[/name_f]

The old lists I found don’t actually feel fully accurate. I’m confused by some of the choices and my reasons behind them. I also tended to go for names “safe” in my small town or extended family. Those were moreso things like [name_m]Caleb[/name_m], [name_f]Gianna[/name_f], [name_m]Anthony[/name_m], etc.
I laughed hard at [name_u]Troian[/name_u] Isobel…I don’t even remember liking that or coming up with it!

[name_f]My[/name_f] worldview and myself have changed over the years to somehow be more aware of some names yet go back to comfortable names which are somehow almost entirely new ones…it’s weird. I would’ve thought there would be a noticeable change but not really. I don’t know.

I used to be obsessed with [name_u]Darrell[/name_u] on a girl. (bc of [name_f]Malory[/name_f] [name_m]Towers[/name_m], I think) I also really liked [name_u]Harper[/name_u], [name_u]Piper[/name_u], [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u], [name_u]Arizona[/name_u], and Louisa–all for girls. Oh, and for boys, I loved the name [name_m]Newton[/name_m], for some reason. [name_f]My[/name_f] style’s definitely changed–much more classic now, I think.

I don’t have Nameberry lists, but I do have kids born over the last 12 years!

With my first kids, I wanted names no one else had. That’s much less important to me now. [name_f]My[/name_f] younger kids’ names are still unusual, but I don’t feel as possessive about them. :slightly_smiling_face:

I definitely like “older” names than I used to. When my oldest was born, we met an [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] and I thought, “That’s a weird name.” Then I named my son [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] 9 years later. :smirk: It being a family name was the biggest reason my opinion changed on that one.

some of the first names i have record of liking:

isabella, mia, felicity, zalia, elena, victoria, catherine, lila, cora, maeve, faith

lucas, evan, theodore, tobias, james, finn, atticus, jasper, callum

current shortlists:

adeline, bridie, bronte, darcie, evie, imogen, mia, summer

ashton, charlie, darcy, jasper, lewis, oliver, reuben, theo

mia and jasper have stayed on my lists the whole time, and i also still love maeve. theodore has changed to just theo and i would still probably consider lila and evan as well.

7 years ago our top picks were [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] and [name_m]Vincent[/name_m].

Today our top picks are [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] and [name_m]Ignatius[/name_m].

So yeah, changed just a tad!

This describes my naming journey and tastes too! I named my son [name_u]Beck[/name_u] almost 20 years ago. He’s my only one, but if I had a child now he’d be most likely to be called [name_u]Henry[/name_u] (which I used to strongly dislike)! I looked after a baby [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] 10+ years ago and my reaction was similar to yours, now I love it :joy:
