I like this name but cant decide if it sounds frumpy.
I’d love to see this name come back! My great great grandma was named [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] and she was such a sweet lady. That said, I currently see it as an old lady name. My husband and I have a running joke that we’ll get stuck with 5 daughters and that 5th one will be named [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] Agony [name_f]Ida[/name_f]-[name_f]Claire[/name_f].
I think we need some sweet little faces associated with the name for it to make a comeback.
I really dislike it, but I suppose it could grow on me. Maybe it is a pronunciation thing. I’ve always heard it said “agg-ness”, but I once heard someone say it something like “ah-ness”, which I find much nicer!
I would definitely classify it as a frumpy, old lady name…but the sound is just really off-putting, so I’m not sure it would ever really make any sort of triumphant comeback.
Personally I prefer [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] and Aglaia, but [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is nice. It’s definitely old lady, but I think it’s just starting to come back. [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] is a super cute nickname that I think makes it seem a little younger.
Personally I am not fond of the name. It sounds harsh to me. And too close to angus, as in angus beef. Sorry.
I like it! I wouldn’t personally use it, but I think it’s really sweet
I really like it. It’s so ready for a come back.
not a fan at all, aside from being old lady, it has a very harsh sound and looks unfeminine imo
I think think of the little girl from Despicable Me,it makes me smile!
[name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] [name_u]Connelly[/name_u]'s daughter is also named [name_f]Agnes[/name_f].
I don’t think it’s too outdated it has a kind of charm.
I really don’t like it, but I do like [name_f]Agatha[/name_f].
Old lady. Sorry
It’s really popular here in [name_u]Sweden[/name_u] so I can only picture it on children atm. But we pronounce it a bit different, like “Angnes”.
It’ll probably make a comeback, but at the moment it reminds me of an old lady’s name unfortunately
I think [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] comes under “old lady names”, but in a good way - ones that might come back into style. I like it more than [name_f]Agatha[/name_f], but dislike [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] as a nickname, either way.
I really like it! It’s kind of a classic Scandi name to me (though I only have Scandi roots, don’t live there). It feels similar to [name_f]Iris[/name_f] in my mind, still a little bit old lady, but actually emerging as cool again. I also think of the little girl in Despicable Me, and it sounded cool to me when I saw that.
I also know an Agnieska ([name_f]Ag[/name_f]-nish-ka) who goes by [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] and I love her name.
I like [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]
I like [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]! Really sweet…
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is perfectly wearable and suitable for a baby. All old women were once babies, young girls, and teenagers, so you shouldn’t ever worry about them being unwearable. Names age with the people that wear them.
Also, in regards to it sounding like [name_m]Angus[/name_m], it doesn’t. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if it did, [name_m]Angus[/name_m] is also a very wearable name that people don’t often think about. I have a brother named [name_m]Angus[/name_m] who wears it especially well and it fits him to a ‘T’.
Old lady. Harsh. Not flattering… I don’t like it or any form of it… I think it’s the [name_f]Ag[/name_f]- that throws me off… reminds me of gag…
I like it.
Here’s my [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] at around 7 months old and then recently (she’ll be 5 in [name_f]April[/name_f]). It wasn’t my first choice for her (I had a few threads here asking for help!) but I’m glad we landed on it. She’s brilliant and oddly polite and loving and completely weird… and her name suits her perfectly.
I’m okay with it not being well-loved. Everyone despised her brother’s name when we chose it but within about 8-10 years there were little Henrys positively everywhere.
