How is Bryn perceived outside the US?

Americans seem to be under the impression that [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] is a girl’s name, but how is the name perceived outside the US? I’m especially interested in English, Welsh, Scottish, and Irish perceptions. Is it dated? Trendy? Boring? Underused?

I am interested in this, too! I have loved [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] on a boy since high school, and it seems like such a handsome boys’ name to me. Cool, funky, international. Much along the lines of [name_m]Brendan[/name_m]/[name_u]Brennan[/name_u] and [name_m]Ben[/name_m]–straightforward and masculine, but less expected. I remember a Welsh person once came on a name forum I frequented years ago that said it was a strong, manly name in [name_m]Wales[/name_m], and, from what I remember, it seemed like she was implying that it was a rather classic name in [name_m]Wales[/name_m]. I’m not sure that’s the general consensus, though–that’s just what I remember hearing from one person. I have a friend from [name_m]Wales[/name_m] currently living in [name_u]London[/name_u], and I know I’ve mentioned [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] around her before, but I don’t know what her impression on it is. I do remember that she was absolutely floored that [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]/[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] got any use in [name_u]America[/name_u], though, as she saw it as a staunchly Welsh classic that didn’t really get use in the UK outside of [name_m]Wales[/name_m]? So I really am not sure what to think, haha. I would love to use [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] (and might, one day, because of my Welsh ancestry), but 95% of people seem to see it as 100% a girls’ name, which makes me sad. It really isn’t. :frowning:

It’s a Welsh boy’s name here. I believe there was a [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] in the tv show ‘[name_m]Gavin[/name_m] and [name_u]Stacey[/name_u]’ which was super popular.

There is a well-known Welsh MALE opera singer called [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] Terfel so I don’t find the name particularly feminine. [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] is a common first name for males in [name_m]Wales[/name_m]. The spelling [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] with two n’s seems to be the girls version in the US. Perhaps Americans find the name feminine due to the association with [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] Mawr, a liberal arts women’s college in Pennsylvania.

Not really your target demographic here, but I’d say in Germany at least [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] would definitely come off as a boy’s name. I’m actually surprised it hasn’t caught on as an alternative to the wildly popular [name_u]Finn[/name_u] or [name_m]Fynn[/name_m]. I do think the unisex name trend is a heavily American though.
