There are five Charlottes on my uni course (out of a class size of 80!) [name]One[/name] goes exclusively by [name]Lottie[/name], one goes by [name]Charlie[/name] a lot of the time, and the other three go by [name]Charlotte[/name], though two of them do go by [name]Char[/name] verbally at times. I’d say it’s a mixed bag, I think you can stick with [name]Charlotte[/name] throughout childhood (the only other [name]Charlotte[/name] I know is 9 and I’ve never heard her be call a nickname) but for the teenage years and adulthood she may decide she wants to be a [name]Charlie[/name] or a [name]Lottie[/name] or something else, or she may stay as a [name]Charlotte[/name] all her life.
[name]One[/name] thing to keep in mind is that your child might be the one who wants a particular nickname. My sister’s name is [name]Gabrielle[/name], She went through a stage where she REALLY wanted to be a boy and insisted on being called [name]Gabe[/name], she went back the the nn [name]Brie[/name] eventually. I had another sister named [name]Alyse[/name] who ended up being called “Bean” until she was 10. All names can come with their own nickname surprises, so just go with something you love!
Of course it’s impossible to predict. I know one young [name]Charlotte[/name] nn [name]Charlie[/name], and one adult [name]Charlotte[/name] nn [name]Charla[/name] (pn. shar-luh as you might guess).
I was in school with three Charlottes who only ever went by [name]Charlotte[/name].
I have made it 35 years as [name]Katherine[/name], so I think [name]Charlotte[/name] could stay [name]Charlotte[/name] if she wants to. Of course friends and family have come up with verbal nicknames, [name]Kay[/name], Kath, [name]Kat[/name], [name]Rosie[/name] (for my middle name), but I never use those formally, and they are just used by certain people. Nicknames are unpredictable, at best.
I voted ‘likely’ that [name]Charlotte[/name] would get a nickname. I know a few and their parents often refer to them as [name]Char[/name]. My own daughter is [name]Charlie[/name]. Lots of us call her [name]Char[/name] (or [name]Char[/name] [name]Char[/name]) as a cuter version.
I am [name]Kathryn[/name] and my mom was adamant that nobody called me [name]Kate[/name] or [name]Kathy[/name] as a child but in my teens I somehow adopted [name]Kat[/name] and didn’t mind it. My mom will never call me [name]Kat[/name] but my friends and even my Dad do. It’s so hard to gauge and you can only really control the nicknaming when they are young I would say.
