I was wondering how long labor & delivery took for everyone especially if there was a difference for first, second, third babies ect.
For me 10 hrs from my water breaking till baby but about an hr of pushing which I thought would be less. Most of my friends seemed to labor much longer but push much less! I did have an epidural & pitocen.
Mine was also around 10 hours. I used the gas which helped me concentrate on breathing through contractions. I pushed for 2 hours before having to go through to theatre for an emergency c-section. It took them two goes to get the epidural in and working, all the while i’m trying to stay still so they can do it and not push during contractions (impossible at that point!)
There is a strong chance that my next delivery will also be surgical…but I will look into options regarding VBAC as well as having discussions with my midwife and with the OB when I near my due date.
About 15 hours from the time my water broke until delivery, but labor didn’t really start for about 7 hours after that, so hard labor with consistent contractions for about 7.5 hours, including two hours of pushing. My son was stuck, and they had to turn him which took most of that time. Once he was unstuck I pushed him out in 10 minutes.
40 hours for me. It was awesome. 4-hour second stage, after which I requested operative vaginal delivery (vacuum). Turned out to have saved his life, as he had a very very short cord that was double-nuchal. His cord was actually cut and clamped on the perineum to permit delivery of his body. We just barely dodged an abruption with that one-- he was bouncing like a yo-yo with each contraction & push, for four hours, tethered by that ultra-short cord. Head banging into the pubic bone the whole time, unable to clear the pelvis. Looking back now I seriously can’t believe his placenta didn’t start to detach and that we didn’t have an absolute fly-down-the-hallway-to-the-OR emergency section.
40 hours of labor and 2 hours of pushing that ended in a c section. He was face-up and then his head was angled and I was pushing him into my pubic bone. Unfortunately, this more than likely could have been prevented if I hadn’t received the epidural and was actually moving around during labor and trying different positions. [name]Baby[/name] #2 is on the way and I am hoping and praying for a VBAC. I do NOT want another surgery. It was quite awful for me.
I haven’t had kids yet, but I know my mother labored for about 36 hours with me ([name]Christmas[/name] [name]Eve[/name] to the day after [name]Christmas[/name]). I was the first born. Neither of my sisters took nearly as long as I (more in the realm of 10-12 hours). We were all born in hospitals with little intervention or drugs, no surgeries, etc. Mom said that when she was done on my turn around, someone could have said, “Aww, you had a puppy!” and she would have been totally fine with it, just so long as she was done.
Hmm…hard labor started at 6 PM on a Thursday, epidural administered around 1 AM, dear daughter appeared at 8:21 Friday AM. What is that? 14 hours? There were moments during those 14 hours when I thought I’d never do it again, but I totally can’t wait to do it again
Rolled in to L&D around 11AM at 6+cm having no idea I was in labor. I’d been having BH since 20-something weeks, and hadn’t felt anything more intense or regular than that. We just went to L&D because I hadn’t felt baby move in awhile. They were going to send me home since the CX didn’t seem to be bothering me and DD’s heart rate was fine. Then the nurse checked me - I don’t think I’ll ever forget her shocked face when she realized I was at 6cm. Anyway, it took a few more hours to get to 8cm, which is when I started to get a bit uncomfortable and scared and got the epidural. I pushed on and off for 2 1/2 hours - they made me stop due to some craziness with DD’s heart rate and do what positioning I could to try to rock her out from under my pubic bone (difficult after the epidural :(). Looking back, I’m kind of shocked I didn’t end up with a c-section and am really grateful for that. DD arrived safely at 10:37PM. So just about 12 hours from the time I found out I was in labor to the time she was delivered.
I feel for you ladies with 40 hour labors. I can’t even imagine.
With my first I was in labour for nearly four days, three of those days in the hospital, I thought she was never going to arrive. After being in hospital for 2 days my water broke and my labour intensified a lot but after 18 hours she still wasn’t here and was going into distress. I was still only 7cm. I was so over it by then and was actually relieved when they said they were taking me to theatre. So I ended up with an emergency c-section. They found that she had her arm above her head and was very very stuck. They said there is no way she would have come out on her own.
With my second I had a planned c-section!
My first arrived about 9 hours after my water broke and his brother came 20 minutes later. Vaginal births in a hospital with gas during the contractions. I don’t remember how long I pushed, but it was definitely long enough- I was exhausted!
I have had six children, and the labor and delivery time has dramatically decreased over time.
[name]Baby[/name] one - born at 39 weeks - weight: 6 lb 7 oz
My first daughter was born at 39 weeks. I was in labor for a total of 13 hours. I had an epidural and pushed for two hours. [name]Lily[/name] [name]Annemarie[/name] [name]Taylor[/name] was born at 5:28 pm on [name]August[/name] 30, 1998
[name]Baby[/name] two - born 37 weeks - weight: 5 lb 4 oz
My second daughter was born at 37 weeks. I was in labor for a total of 7 hours. I pushed for about 45-60 minutes. [name]Scarlett[/name] [name]Elaine[/name] [name]Taylor[/name] was born at 7:42 pm on [name]September[/name] 22, 2005
[name]Baby[/name] three - born 38 weeks - weight: 7 lb 6 oz
My third daughter was bigger than my first two and was 38 weeks. I was in labor for about 3.5 hours, and pushed for about half an hour.

Babies four and five - born 31 weeks - weight: baby a - 3 lb 10 oz, baby b - 3 lb 14 oz
My fourth and fifth daughters were born prematurely by c-section at 31 weeks. They were both very small and spent about 9 days in the NICU. I went into premature labor at 28 weeks, and was ordered to bedrest and put on meds to stop the labor. Unfortunately, at 31 weeks it was impossible to stop, but the girls had developed enough to have a better chance at being healthy outside the womb. They were our little Independence [name]Day[/name] babies and are now healthy two year olds. [name]Evelyn[/name] [name]Claire[/name] and [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Eleanor[/name] [name]Taylor[/name] were born at 2:24 PM on [name]July[/name] 4, 2010.
[name]Baby[/name] six - born 40 weeks - weight: 8lb 14 oz
Finally, my little man. This one was a lot of firsts. First boy. First 40-weeker. First 8-pounder. This was exciting. Because I had a c-section with my last pregnancy and because he was quite large, I had a scheduled c-section. My waters broke around 8pm on Friday night 2 days before due date, but labour never actually started for me. I had to go into hospital after 5pm [name]Saturday[/name] night to get gels. Labour eventually began around 2am [name]Sunday[/name] morning and [name]Lily[/name] [name]Isabella[/name] was born just after 5am, 3 and a bit hours labour in total, 1.5 hrs pushing. Only used gas which did bugger all but help me concentrate on breathing.
Hearing other labour stories, I know I was fortunate and really feel for some women!
I had some prodromal labor with all of my girls, but active labor with my first was about 7 hours. I pushed for just under an hour.
My OB performed AROM with my 2nd. It was 3 hours of labor and 6 minutes of pushing.
I had elective inductions (pit/AROM) with my 3rd and 4th. It was three hours of labor (25 minutes pushing) with my 3rd. Four hours for labor with my 4th - I pushed through two contractions and she was out.
All told, I labored for 24 hours. Contractions began at 6 am, but did not get really intense till about 2 pm. It was back labor, and I had very little relief between contractions. I labored unmedicated till 2 am (we had a doula), at which point (still not fully dilated, having stalled at around 8.5 cm), I asked for an epidural, which kicked in around 3 am. [name]Baby[/name] was in distress (major heart rate deceleration) during pushing, and we eventually had to go surgical–turns out we had a really short, “flaccid” (ob’s word) cord. [name]Lovely[/name] baby girl was born just before 6 am, but I’d have to say my experience of labor (unremitting pain) felt fairly traumatizing.
It took me 15 hours from my water breaking till baby. I only had about 45 minutes of pushing. I had an epidural and pitocen as well. Hopefully this one will be easier!!!
