I do feel that these are classic names. They won’t be called “decade” names like some that we know of. BUT I still wouldn’t want to use a name where there were 5 in each classroom! :o
It is very unlikely that there would be 5 in their class regardless of popularity.
In my home state of Tasmania, [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is number one… I work with children and have only met 1 [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] in five years!
If these are the names you love you should use them
When I taught 1st grade for 3 years in Nyc, I had 2 Rubys and 1 [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. No [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] or any [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] variants for that matter.
I know 1 [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], but no girls named [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] or [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. I doubt that you would have more than 2 per class, if that. Any of those names would be beautiful and classic, and not dated.
I’ve never met someone with any of the names, but I do know of a girl named [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] and one named [name_f]Violet[/name_f]- but both are in their mid to early teens.
I know of a little [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] and a little [name_f]Violet[/name_f], although I’ve never met them personally. There was an [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] in my class at high school, but I’m almost twenty-one now. All of these are great, timeless names so I think you should go with one of them if you love it enough.
They are all lovely names, but probably due to get more popular. In Australia, like pp said - [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is number 1 or number 2 in most states, and all three names are in the top 100 in both Australia and the UK:
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] - no.1/2 in Australia, no. 12 in UK
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] - no. 60 in Australia, no. 100 in UK
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] - no. 71 in Australia, no 61 in UK
As the US is tending to follow UK naming trends atm, its just something to know.
That said, they are all gorgeous names and being popular probably isnt the worst thing. I think [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] (as an [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] variant) is one of those names that can be quite popular but never feel ‘trendy’ or overexposed.
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] - no, just one dog.
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] - no, just one mn (nearly 2 years old)
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] - one (nearly one year old).
I don’t think any of these names are overly common irl. They are all beautiful classic names and you can’t go far wrong whichever you choose!
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]: one 6-year-old (sisters [name_f]Claire[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]), two 20-year-olds (sister [name_f]Cynthia[/name_f])
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]: I don’t know any!
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]: one 6-year-old (brother [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m]), two 20-year-olds (sister [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] and brother [name_m]Harry[/name_m]) and one 19-year-old.
I know three girls named [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] (under 8) and I know there are at least 3 more at my sons school. I don’t know any children named [name_f]Violet[/name_f] or [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
As already said, it would be very rare to have more than 3 (tops) children who share a name in a single class, the top ten names are used less than the top ten in the 80’s for say. I know I girl named Ruby who is around 5-6 years old, my sister-in-laws half sister who’s twin in Caitlin- and the only one I know of too. I know no Violet’s and my other sister-in-law on the bf’s side in called Eliza (30ish) - but her name is spelled differently to lead to the nn Elie more easily, and apart from her I only now 1 Elizabeth.
This is based on living in the UK and Melbourne (Aus)
I am also in Tasmania, Australia, (haha!) and as previously said, [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is currently number one here. Yet I have only ever met one girl named [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] (about 12 years ago) and I have met 2 [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]'s my entire life, both who are now teens. The only person I have ever met named [name_f]Violet[/name_f] was my great-gran
So they definitely aren’t common names here!
Thank you all SO much for the great feedback! I am kind of shocked that you didn’t all know 3 or 4 people with the names. But I think of the name [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] --it’s not in the top 1000, yet I know 3 boys under 5 yrs old with the name! So the charts don’t give you a guarantee that you won’t encounter one in a classroom. I’m not necessary scared of a familiar name, I just don’t like picking names that are everywhere.
Also, for reference, since a lot of people were talking about popularity in Australia - I’m in the US.
I’ve only met 1 [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] (She’s 17-18). [name_m]Ive[/name_m] never met a [name_f]Violet[/name_f] or [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]. This being said I am practically never around children.
