How many names is too many?

[name_m]Just[/name_m] curious, has anyone given their child more than 3 names? [name_u]Love[/name_u] to hear your thoughts and opinions?

I only know people with 0-2 middle names, but there’s no reason why you can’t go for more if you want to. [name_m]Just[/name_m] be prepared for them to sometimes not all fit on various forms etc. (I sometimes struggle and I only have 2 middles).

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you have strong reasons for wanting to use all the names? If not, it might be worth whittling down a bit for the sake of practicality and flow of the name. I’ll never be able to use all the names I love but I’d rather be selective and give my children names that will not cause them too many admin problems!

You could even give the child one or two middles on their BC but use additional “bonus” middles on a day-to-day basis (though I find middle names are actually very rarely used).

My daughter had First Name, Chinese name, Hyphenated last name. Her Chinese name is two characters, but we spelled it as one name in English. Basically we took 5 name components and smooshed them into 3 parts for her legal name.

Thank you! That is our situation, this will be our last little one (adopted) and we need to keep his birth name, plus the name we love for him, but then have 2 important family names which we can’t choose between, so were wondering if 4 names plus a surname was too much

I have a cousin with 3 first names, 3 middle names and one surname. I think that’s too much. I think you should just keep the four names you’ve got, will you call him his birth name or the name you love? If anything, try to drop one of the family names or smoosh them. My kids both have two middle names and it’s posed no problems.

We are planning on giving 4 to 5 names + Lastname, but I come from [name_f]France[/name_f], and it’s no that weird in my country. We will probably only use 3 on the papers (ID, documents, etc), but 5 on the birth certificate (the last 2 are family names). You don’t have to use all your names

Hmm. I only know people with 1 middle name, but I love the idea of having 2. 3, not so much. 4, that is a lot. I’m not sure. The position you’re in trying to combine two full names into one is a tough one. Maybe pick and choose from each? I’m not sure. [name_f]Do[/name_f] what feels right.
