There are about 20 - 25 names for girls and about 15 - 20 for boys on my long list.
About 10 - 15 names for girls and about 10 names for boy on my short list. Those are the ones that I would really consider if I had a child right now (which is not going to happen for a few years).
I know some people have 200 names for either gender on their long list, some have 8. I don’t think there’s a “right” number. For me names on my long list are ones that I like or love but wouldn’t really use.
Again, no right number for the shortlist.
Middle names to me are names that I would also consider as first names so I don’t have any separate lists.
I just keep top tens for each gender (I guess those are my short list) and then long lists. Currently my long lists are 49 girls’ names and 28 boys’ names. I also have a further 37 girls’ and 26 boys’ names on a sort of “[name_m]Long[/name_m] long list.”
I don’t think there’s a right/wrong number of names to have on one’s list; and it kind of depends on goals, anyway. If you’re trying to name a child, then you probably shouldn’t go to the hospital with more than 5 or so names, but at the same time you shouldn’t limit yourself to five names if a sixth name feels right.
