[name_m]Just[/name_m] a little fun and to make sure I’m not the only one who is constantly having to correct people on how to spell my name. I even have people tell me I misspelled my own name and will hand me forms back for corrections like I don’t know how my own name is spelled
Some days I wish my mom would have just stuck with [name_u]Chelsea[/name_u] others I am glad she went with [name_f]Chelsy[/name_f], but it’s a pain sometimes. I was one of those kids who would always want the personalized key chain when you went to the souvenir shops on a family vacation and alas my name was never there. Very sad for an 11 year old with a need for a personalized coffee mug.
Almost all the time, from the time I was a child, believe it or not. [name_f]Addie[/name_f] just seems to be a really “foreign” concept for some people, especially as I was growing up in the 90s. It has been misspelled and misspronounced more times than I can count. And I don’t get it, because to me, it’s a pretty simple, easy name. I still love it, though.
quite a lot, which is so baffling to me! [name_f]Hayley[/name_f]. its really not hard! but i get [name_u]Haley[/name_u]/Hayly/haile/hayleigh/harley/hallie etc. my christmas cards from school friends as a kid were shocking, my mum would get so annoyed!
I sometimes get [name_f]Mollie[/name_f] but most people spell it [name_f]Molly[/name_f]. I do think [name_f]Mollie[/name_f] looks wrong and I don’t get why people want to spell it that was but maybe that’s because I’ve always been [name_f]Molly[/name_f]. I have a friend called [name_f]Kittie[/name_f] and when I first met her I always wrote [name_f]Kitty[/name_f] because it came more naturally to me to write it as such, I now write [name_f]Kittie[/name_f] but I do spell it with a Y the rest of the time.
[name_f]My[/name_f] full name is never misspelled (although I have seen other spellings, mine is the standard and, I would argue, correct version). But the shortened version that I go by is misspelled all the bloody time. I use what I think is the most intuitive spelling, since I simply take the ending off my name and use the beginning part, but I get 5 different incorrect variations. The thing is, I’ve never known anybody with my name who didn’t use the exact same short version with the exact same spelling, and I think it’s definitely the most common version in the UK. But not in the USA I don’t think.
It most annoys me when people confuse my name for a large church… Like anyone’s gonna spell it like that.
[name_f]Edit[/name_f]: Wait, make that 6 incorrect versions. Sigh.
It happens all the time. [name_f]My[/name_f] name is spelled [name_u]Shelly[/name_u], but I get [name_u]Shelley[/name_u], [name_u]Shellie[/name_u], [name_f]Shellee[/name_f], Shelleigh, and I’ve even got Cheleigh/Chelleigh before. It usually doesn’t bother me, and, unless it’s important, I don’t bother correcting them. The only time it bothers me is when a family member (that i’ve had plenty of contact with), or a good friend that I’ve known for a long time spells it wrong.
I’ve gotten [name_f]Stephany[/name_f] a few times, and I just CRINGE!
Haha yeah, this happened once to me, and I just couldn’t believe it. I started writing her name as [name_f]Emaleigh[/name_f] to get her back ![]()
I haven’t had someone spell it correctly on the first try in all my 15 years. It’s an alternate spelling of a top 10 name though. [name_f]My[/name_f] full name is [name_f]Abigael[/name_f] but I go by [name_u]Abby[/name_u]. [name_f]My[/name_f] nickname is spelled wrong more often than I would think. I’ve gotten [name_u]Abbey[/name_u], [name_u]Abbie[/name_u], [name_u]Abi[/name_u], [name_f]Abbi[/name_f], and [name_f]Aby[/name_f].
I had problems when I moved states with people misspelling my name. They originally had it spelled [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], the normal way. Then my mom tried to correct them but they spelled it [name_f]Abigale[/name_f]. Then I told my foreign language teacher how to spell it and she still got it wrong [name_f]Abbigael[/name_f]. Finally, it’s [name_f]Abigael[/name_f]. Ugh!
I recently learned that even my best friend doesn’t know how to spell my name. She spelled it [name_f]Abbigail[/name_f] (the second B on accident, the second I not) even though I’ve told her countless times how to spell it. Next time I’m gonna spell her name [name_f]Lauryn[/name_f] or [name_u]Loren[/name_u].
Although we actually don’t spell it the same, oh how I feel your pain. Like, wtf is [name_f]Aby[/name_f] supposed to be. It wouldn’t even be pronounced the same according to the laws of English phonics! And an abbey is a bloody monastery.
Interestingly, the way you spell your full name is legal in Iceland, but my name is not!
I’ve had my name spelled wrong more times than I can count. Aunts, uncles, cousins…even my own mother-in-law has trouble spelling my name! I was also one of those kids who could never find a mug, key-chain or trinket with my name spelled correctly.
This happens to me all the time. People spell my name wrong and say my name wrong even when it’s written in front of them! It’s even worse when it’s family and close friends! [name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Kirsten[/name_f] but more often than not I get [name_f]Krysten[/name_f] or [name_f]Kristen[/name_f] and when they actually get the ‘Kir’ bit right I end up with [name_f]Kirsty[/name_f] or [name_f]Kirstin[/name_f]! It annoys me most when people call me [name_f]Kristen[/name_f] or [name_f]Kirsty[/name_f] especially if I’ve already corrected them. After a few times I just tend to give up and answer anyway.
People misspell my full name on occasion, though I don’t know how the most popular spelling of [name_f]Karen[/name_f] is hard to spell?? [name_u]Ren[/name_u] is never misspelt, strangely enough.
[name_f]My[/name_f] grandparents, uncle and boyfriend’s parents always write [name_u]Jaime[/name_u].
When my friend and I were working at Babies R Us, this shopper asked my friend to look up her daughter, [name_u]Jaime[/name_u]'s, Rewards [name_m]Card[/name_m]. [name_f]My[/name_f] friend automatically typed [name_u]Jamie[/name_u], and the woman lost it. She told my friend to tell me that my mother spelled my name wrong. I guess she got a lot of misspellings to have gotten that upset.
I just brush it off. It doesn’t bother me. I’ve gotten [name_u]Jamie[/name_u], [name_u]Jaime[/name_u], [name_u]Jaimie[/name_u], and [name_f]Jami[/name_f].
In all of my 16 years, I have NEVER had it spelled correctly. Close friends and family spell it wrong…
[name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_u]Austyn[/name_u]. With the “y”. [name_m]Ive[/name_m] had people spell it Aystyn, [name_m]Austin[/name_m], Aystn, Austn, [name_u]Austen[/name_u], Aystin, Aystun… [name_f]Every[/name_f] other way you can spell it… [name_m]Ive[/name_m] even had it mispronounced… Ugh, the joys of misspelled make naime… -_-
Aw, man, and I get super annoyed when people misspell my name as [name_f]Ashely[/name_f]! (But, ughhh, what is that, even?! It’s [name_u]Ashley[/name_u]. [name_u]ASH[/name_u]-lee. [name_u]ASH[/name_u]-ley. ASHHHH-ley. Not [name_u]Ash[/name_u]-UH-lee. It’s not even pronounced the same!) It’s happened several times, but it drives me up the wall. I’ve gotten [name_f]Ashlee[/name_f], [name_f]Ashlie[/name_f], [name_f]Ashleigh[/name_f], [name_f]Ashlea[/name_f], etc., on occasion, too, but none of those bother me nearly so much as [name_f]Ashely[/name_f] (and I know it’s not a typo because they will ask me, “Is it A-S-H-E-L-Y?” And I’ll say, “No, it’s A-S-H-L-E-Y.” And they’ll still spell it their way. le sigh.).
[name_f]My[/name_f] name is misspelled a lot! I h a unique spelling of a top 100 name for the year I was born but a lot of times, people don’t even spell it the way it’s supposed to be spelled! I can live with people spelling it the original spelling but I haaate it when people spell it some other creative way.
[name_f]My[/name_f] name is usually misspelled. I’m a [name_f]Marisa[/name_f] with the second syllable pronounced “riss” not “reese”, so people usually spell it [name_f]Marissa[/name_f]. I’ve gotten [name_f]Marrissa[/name_f] and [name_f]Merissa[/name_f] too. I don’t bother to correct the spelling unless it’s for a legal document. Hey, it is the less common spelling in the States. People second guess it, “One ‘s’?” and I tell them that’s all my momma gave me.
But I’m let down when people I know well misspell it (hello, brother, you’ve known me my whole life!). On a side note, I don’t generally correct people who pronounce it muh-[name_u]REESE[/name_u]-uh either because that’s the way to say it in many languages.
[name_f]Julia[/name_f]? Practically never. But my last name gets misspelled/mispronounced all the freaking time.
[name_f]My[/name_f] birth name, [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], hasn’t seen too many mispellings, although there are cards from when I was born, with friends and relatives spelling it [name_f]Sophy[/name_f], [name_f]Sofie[/name_f], Sofee, etc, and I have a feeling that was more to do with the annoyance that my parents didn’t pick a family name rather than actually not knowing how to spell it. However, I haven’t used that named since I was about 2 weeks old. [name_m]Even[/name_m] when I was in trouble, I would still get called Nooshi. [name_f]My[/name_f] lord, has that seem some misspellings: Nushi, Nushy, Nushie, Nooshie, Nooshee, Noshie, Noushi, Noushie, Noushy, Noushee, Nashi (I’m not a pear, thank you), the list goes on and on and on. I don’t mind too much, but it is a bit disheartening when the relatives who have known you your entire life, and no matter how many times you correct them, still spell it Noushy. However, nearly everyone spells my sister’s name [name_u]Eden[/name_u]/[name_f]Edie[/name_f] is [name_u]Edan[/name_u] / [name_m]Edon[/name_m] / [name_f]Edin[/name_f] / Edun or E.D, so I don’t feel so bad :). I love my name, I absolutely adore it, and I am so glad that Nooshi is the name I go by and associate with, I just wish that people could actually spell it right half the time, especially after I’ve told them.
Also, my last name, which rhymes with [name_f]Mavis[/name_f], gets misspelled ALL the time. It is one of THE most common surnames (okay, not quite [name_m]Smith[/name_m], [name_m]Brown[/name_m] or [name_m]Jones[/name_m], but up there). Why can nobody spell it?
