You’d be surprised how many people can’t tell the difference between [name_u]Angel[/name_u] (my name) and Angle (definitely not my name.)
Basically like once a day.
[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite, like many berries, is when someone asks “[name_m]How[/name_m] do you spell it?” and I say K-A-I-T-L-I-N and they write down K-A-I-T-L-Y-N. I just grimace and don’t even bother correcting people anymore. I still like my name, though!
I always thought I had a pretty simple name. Its been at the top of the SSA list for so long you would think people would spell it right. “Its [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]…with an h”. It has been spelt:
Hsara- a teacher did this 5 times before I just said “forget the h.”
[name_f]Sarra[/name_f]- What happened to the h? And what is up with the second r?
[name_u]Sierra[/name_u]- That’s not even the same name.
[name_f]Sierrah[/name_f]- At least there’s an h on the end.
[name_f]Shara[/name_f]- Huh… Um no.
[name_f]Sarahi[/name_f]- Why?
Chera- Nope not even close.
[name_f]Sara[/name_f]- “WITH AN H!”
Sherrah- NOO!!
There are others but I try to block out the really horrible ones.(Yes there have been worse.)
Why do people have such a hard time with this?
[name_f]My[/name_f] name is always spelt wrong even though it is a word. I have gotten [name_f]Ebonie[/name_f] and [name_f]Ebonee[/name_f] almost as much as I have gotten [name_f]Ebony[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] sister gets even worse [name_u]Adel[/name_u], [name_f]Adelle[/name_f] or [name_m]Edel[/name_m] for [name_f]Adele[/name_f] and my brother gets [name_m]Isac[/name_m], [name_m]Izaac[/name_m], [name_m]Izaak[/name_m], [name_u]Isak[/name_u], Isacc, Isaacc and [name_m]Izak[/name_m] when it is [name_m]Isaac[/name_m].
[name_f]My[/name_f] name is misspelled more often than not. [name_f]My[/name_f] Starbucks coffee cups are hilarious! The most memorable are “Gamama” and “Jamane”. I don’t know how that even happened…
[name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] and it’s a habit now that I spell it out as I say it. The most common misspellings are [name_f]Jemma[/name_f] (a whole syllable missing!), [name_f]Jemimah[/name_f] and [name_f]Gemima[/name_f]. It’s an annoyance but not a deal-breaker as I adore my name!
All the time! I don’t think anyone has ever spelt it right lol : P
[name_f]My[/name_f] name gets misspelled all the time, but that’s because there are a few common spellings of my name. [name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] and the most common spelling I get is [name_f]Lori[/name_f], which always irked me. Growing up, I always hated seeing those trinkets and doodads with the name [name_f]Lori[/name_f] on it, but never [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] I’ve taken to spelling out my name when people ask now, and they still sometimes spell it wrong. Oh well! I’ve gotten used to it so it doesn’t bother me as much anymore.
What does bother me is that people misspell (and mispronounce) my daughter’s name all the time. Her name is [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f] and we call her [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u] or [name_f]Gwynna[/name_f]/Gwynnie. While the mispronunciations don’t bother me so much, it does bother me when people spell her name [name_f]Gwen[/name_f], even after I correct them. It bothers me even more when close family members refuse to spell it [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u] and will only spell it [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] because “[name_u]Gwyn[/name_u] doesn’t look like a real name.” sigh
[name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_u]Jamie[/name_u], and I love it! A lot of people think it’s spelled [name_u]Jaime[/name_u], [name_u]Jaimee[/name_u] or [name_u]Jaimie[/name_u]. It doesn’t bother me too much, but I’d always thought that [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] was the most common or “usual” spelling for a girl.
[name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Bridget[/name_f], and it gets misspelled quite often, usually as [name_f]Bridgette[/name_f]. But most people ask me how to spell my name before they even try (except at Starbucks)
I get weird things- my name is [name_f]Elise[/name_f], and sometimes people call me [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_u]Lisa[/name_u], [name_f]Elisa[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f]- but they generally get the spelling right. It’s the pronunciation they struggle with.
[name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], and I sometimes get Joesphine, [name_f]Josiephine[/name_f], but not that often. For some reason, my nickname [name_u]Jo[/name_u] is most commonly misspelled. I always get [name_m]Joe[/name_m], which really annoys me as it’s the male spelling, and I have even got Jooe on occasion! You wouldn’t think [name_u]Jo[/name_u] would be hard to mess up, but apparently it is…
[name_f]Every[/name_f] single time it has ever been said/heard/wrote/etc. anything. It has literally got to be the most diverse of spelling names there is.
[name_f]Brittani[/name_f]. UGH.
Not one person has ever got it right first try, ever.
[name_f]My[/name_f] name is misspelled 98% of the time. [name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] but I’ve seen it spelled [name_f]Alissa[/name_f], [name_f]Allyssa[/name_f], [name_f]Allisa[/name_f], [name_f]Alysa[/name_f], [name_f]Alisa[/name_f], Alayssa, [name_f]Elissa[/name_f], [name_f]Illysa[/name_f] etc. People never know whether to double the L or the S or to use a Y or I or if it starts with an A or E. Or people don’t hear or read my name correctly and instead call me [name_f]Melissa[/name_f], [name_f]Alison[/name_f], [name_f]Elise[/name_f], [name_f]Alicia[/name_f], [name_f]Elisa[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_u]Lisa[/name_u] or something else totally random. I really do not like my name for these reasons
[name_f]My[/name_f] name is usually misspelled.
[name_f]Jordana[/name_f], [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]/Jorjayna (you weren’t LISTENING), Jordyna, Jordayna, [name_f]Giordana[/name_f], [name_f]Johanna[/name_f]…
Half my own extended family spells it Jordana, which would be probably more correct, but isn’t how my name is spelled. (I have two n’s)
My nickname turns into: Jozie, Jo-Z (no, stop) Jossie, and once, Jose.
“[name_f]My[/name_f] name is misspelled 98% of the time. I hear ya. I’m an [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] too and have gotten each of those misspellings or called by those kind of sound-a-like names too. Getting called something else or my name completely wrong (like [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] or something) doesn’t bother me. I just answer to several different names and different spellings. Now if it were to happen on my diploma or another important document, I would say something. On a sidenote, a couple I know just had an [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f]…make that an…wait for it…Allyssah. Good luck to that little girl lol. Anyhow usually people get it right…or close enough.
I work at [name_m]McDonald[/name_m]'s and they have us take names for orders, like Starbucks. I always feel bad when I misspell a name but when you have such a short period of time to take it down before you have to take another order during a rush, you can’t stand around an ask “is it [name_f]Katelyn[/name_f]/[name_f]Caitlyn[/name_f]/[name_f]Caitlin[/name_f]?” or whatever the name is. And if your name is really rare, I’m sorry in advance but I won’t likely know how to spell it.
So many times. And it’s especially annoying when your name is the traditionally spelling!
As a [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f], you get hit with misspellings, by strangers, friends and family. I’ve had [name_f]Jasmin[/name_f], [name_f]Jazmine[/name_f], [name_f]Jazzmine[/name_f], Jassmine, Jamine, [name_f]Jazmin[/name_f], [name_f]Yasmin[/name_f], Jammin, [name_f]Jasmyn[/name_f], [name_f]Jasmyne[/name_f], Jasnime… the list goes on.
I’ve only had my first name misspelled once in 22 years, it was when I was in primary school and was a christmas card spelling me name Tarragh. I’m glad my first name and middle name have common spellings that everyone gets the first time as my lastname is long, french and is never correct even when I spell it out, I often get [name_f]Tara[/name_f]-[name_u]Lee[/name_u] instead of [name_f]Tara[/name_f] [name_m]Le[/name_m] _________.
[name_f]Cynthia[/name_f]? 90% of the time.
All the time. I expect people not to know how to spell it so I always just spell it automatically if they are writing or sometimes just hand them my ID because it’s much quicker. [name_f]My[/name_f] name is not widely used here and has no standard spelling in the US.
My situation is similar to that of Alyssa’s but I don’t dislike my name. I would probably prefer a more common name but I am glad not to be a Jennifer. It never occurred to me to change it. It would be strange to be someone else and my mother picked my name with love, it wouldn’t feel right to change it unless I had a really good reason for it.
Not being able to find a personalized thing bothered me when I was a kid but that was very short lived. Nowadays it’s so easy just to order personalized things anyway I don’t see why people are still bothered by it.
LOL! As a [name_f]Sara[/name_f] “without an H” this whole post is hilarious. Most of my friends remember there is no H AFTER they write it so I get a lot of crossed out H’s. I also get [name_f]Shara[/name_f] and [name_f]Tara[/name_f] a lot.
I have even had it spelled [name_f]Sera[/name_f] (this is how he spelled HIS daughter’s name) and [name_f]Cera[/name_f] (like the Triceratops!).
