How overused do you think Elizabeth is?

I like classic and vintage names but I am worried that [name]Elizabeth[/name] is just too overdone, WDYT? I do love it for the potential NN [name]Elsie[/name] and the countless saint connections so it would work perfectly for our family. So WDYT overdone or a perennial classic?

I think [name]Elizabeth[/name] is getting a little worn out. I love that it has great historical & literary references, but honestly I’m surprised [name]Elizabeth[/name] wasn’t the #1 girl’s name. I think that we need to give [name]Elizabeth[/name] a little time to breathe. [name]How[/name] about [name]Elsbeth[/name] or [name]Elspeth[/name]? It’s similar to [name]Elizabeth[/name] but fresher.

I was thinking about this yesterday actually and I also couldn’t decide. I love that it oozes class and is an uber classic but then in reality I’m not sure if it’s just pedestrian.

Its my middle name (a naming tradition passed down - [name]Elisabeth[/name] with an S) but it seemed it was EVERYONEs middle name in highschool - so kids born at the end of the 80s.

I like some NN - [name]Elsie[/name], [name]Etta[/name], [name]Lilibet[/name] - but then its also a name associated with [name]Betsy[/name], [name]Betty[/name] and [name]Liz[/name].

I’m not much help I know, but I think if you were to use it, the middle name should have spunk. Like [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Grace[/name] is a yawn fest, [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Delphine[/name] or [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Saffron[/name] is a bit cooler.

FWIW When I was thinking about it the other day, I was considering [name]Elisabeth[/name] [name]Daphne[/name].

I’m going to disagree with the others. I don’t think a classic name like this one is ever boring. It has so many nickname options that if your daughter feels her name is too common, she can always go by something else.

I also think [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Grace[/name] is gorgeous lol.

I hardly ever meet anyone with this as a first name, at least not babies and toddlers. And it’s a beautiful and classic name.

[name]Elizabeth[/name] is perennially popular, but it has so many nickname options going for it, that I don’t think it matters. Anyone called [name]Elizabeth[/name] can make the name their own, because it has so many short forms and derivatives.

Not all names can do that.

I personally love the name [name]Sarah[/name], but it is one of those names you can’t do much with, so I can understand why some people have found that “overused”. Someone named [name]Sarah[/name] is most likely going to be [name]Sarah[/name] (I’ve never known a [name]Sarah[/name] go by one of its derivatives like [name]Sadie[/name] or [name]Sally[/name]).

An [name]Elizabeth[/name] can be a [name]Bess[/name], [name]Bette[/name], [name]Betty[/name], [name]Beth[/name], [name]Lily[/name], [name]Ellie[/name], [name]Ella[/name], [name]Elsie[/name], [name]Eliza[/name], [name]Elise[/name], [name]Buffy[/name], [name]Elisa[/name], [name]Liza[/name], [name]Liza[/name], [name]Liz[/name], [name]Lizzy[/name], [name]Lilibet[/name] and so on, so forth.

Not from GB or [name]America[/name]/[name]Canada[/name], but I think it’s common as middle name. As [name]Grace[/name], it’s common as first name and middle name.

I agree. I love [name]Eliza[/name], [name]Bess[/name] and [name]Elisa[/name], so I would suggest [name]Eliza[/name] [name]Bethany[/name], You can call her [name]Eliza[/name]-[name]Beth[/name]-… [name]Eliza[/name] pn eh-lee-sah.

Thanks ladies! I am still not 100% sure though, any other opinions to help me?

It’s a timeless classic name, and you can get the vintage-y kick from the nickname you choose ([name]Elsie[/name] for sure, also [name]Bette[/name], [name]Betsy[/name], and [name]Bess[/name]). It’s one of the names that can be in the top 10 for a century and never be overdone

Others like [name]Elizabeth[/name]: [name]Margaret[/name], [name]Katherine[/name]/[name]Catharine[/name], [name]Susannah[/name], [name]Frances[/name], [name]Cecilia[/name], [name]Marion[/name]/[name]Marianne[/name], [name]Jane[/name]/[name]Joan[/name], [name]Anne[/name], [name]Ellen[/name]/[name]Helen[/name], [name]Caroline[/name], [name]Louise[/name]/[name]Louisa[/name].
Names that are more ‘vintage-y’: [name]Beatrice[/name], [name]Edith[/name], [name]Leonora[/name], [name]Cordelia[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name], [name]Matilda[/name], [name]Josephine[/name], [name]Winifred[/name], [name]Dorothy[/name], [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Lavinia[/name], [name]Agatha[/name].

I’ve always loved it. It was on my list for my daughter but both my mom and sister claimed it was too boring and stuffy and as an impressionable teenager, I listened to them. Luckily though, my daughter does not seem like an [name]Elizabeth[/name].

I would say it’s not that common where I live but my mom had TWO [name]Elizabeth[/name]'s last year. [name]One[/name] went by [name]Elizabeth[/name] and another went by an unreleated nickname. But other than that, I never hear it. No [name]Elizabeth[/name]'s at any of the daycares or preschools we’ve attended. I think [name]Elizabeth[/name] is always going to be an elegant choice and never seem dated or used-up. Go figure, now my mom loves the name! Maybe baby #2

Not a bit.

[name]Elizabeth[/name] can do no wrong in my eyes, the definition of classic.

[name]Even[/name] if you consider it timeless and beautiful (I once did) most people with just think of another [name]Elizabeth[/name] as just that…another girl who will have to include the first initial of her last name on paper. I’m not trying to attack the name either, I’m just stating my honest opinion…people thought [name]Emily[/name]/[name]Emma[/name]/[name]Hannah[/name] were beautiful too, but that was before 20,000 of them were born in one year…names that grow popular grow worn out, at least for decades more.

But because the name [name]Elizabeth[/name] has so many nickname options, it’s versatile enough that no [name]Elizabeth[/name] should have to write the first initial of her last name on paper.

My daughter with this name is the only one in her kindergarten class with that name. I only know of 2 others in the whole school, as opposed to countless Sophias, Isabellas, Olivias, Giannas, ect…

I think it’s overdone personally, even with all of its variants, I personally can’t get past the fact that they are all the same name. If you added up all of the Elizabeths, Elizas, Elsas, Elspeths, Elisabeths, Betsys, ad infinitum (since they are all counted separately by the SS administration) it is probably in the top 5, add all of the Isabelles (which is technically a variant) and its number 1 by a landslide.

However, it’s astonishing array of nicknames does keep it useable, and it is beautiful-[name]IMO[/name] it is one of the most lovely Biblical names for women.

The SSA only counts it if it’s the person’s legal first name, which means that anyone named [name]Betsy[/name] or [name]Isabelle[/name] will most likely not be going by [name]Elizabeth[/name]. I know some consider t [name]Isabelle[/name] the same as [name]Elizabeth[/name], but I honestly can’t wrap my mind around that. To me, it’s like [name]Charlotte[/name] being the same name as [name]Carol[/name]. If I met two kids named [name]Isabelle[/name] and [name]Elizabeth[/name], it wouldn’t even occur to me that their names are the same name.

[name]Elizabeth[/name] is wonderful! I’ve seriously considered it as a first or middle name.
