How popular is Abigail?

My husband is set on the name [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] if we have a baby girl on the next few weeks. I am concerned since it has been on the top 10 list for years now and I want a more unique name. Does anyone have any suggestions to make us both happy?

Depends on where you live…[name_f]Arizona[/name_f]? Overall in the U.S. it was #7 last year with one out of every 158 girls born in 2012 named [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]. However, according to the whitepages site (which hasn’t been updated since 2011)…it is much less popular in [name_f]Arizona[/name_f] than other states.

[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] was #8 in [name_f]Arizona[/name_f] last year. BUT…there were only 259 born in the whole state.

What does your husband like about [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]? What names do you like?

Some similar names that come to mind for me are:
[name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]
[name_f]Natalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Gianna[/name_f]
[name_f]Hailey[/name_f]
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]
[name_f]Laila[/name_f]
[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f]
[name_f]Aileen[/name_f]
[name_f]Abrielle[/name_f]
[name_u]Addison[/name_u]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]

Where I live, there are tons of [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]'s and [name_u]Abby[/name_u]'s. I hear it constantly. However, it is beautiful and popular for a reason. Have you considered [name_f]Lydia[/name_f]? I think it has a similar feel, but is much less popular.

In my high school, there are three [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]'s with the nn [name_u]Abby[/name_u] in my grade. However, I don’t know anyone under the age of 8 with the name, so I think you’d be fine.

My favourites right now are:
[name_f]Brenna[/name_f]
[name_f]Alina[/name_f]
Taelynn
[name_u]Alexis[/name_u]

He was really hoping to use an “A” name because we both have A names.

We actually live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and it’s been in the top 10 of popular names which makes me nervous.

I’m from [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_m]York[/name_m], and it feels like it’s gotten less popular here recently.

Interestingly, I know quite a few couples who had it on their list but ultimately went with something else. Everybody loves it I suppose!

I know only one [name_f]Abbigail[/name_f], born last year. We live in Vancouver.

As another poster said, it’s popular for a reason. I think of [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. Popular, but classic. I’d be much more concerned if it was a trendy and popular name.

That said, there are other names that are less common, but will give you the nickname [name_u]Abby[/name_u] since your husband wants an A name, like [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] or [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]. Another poster also mentioned [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] and [name_f]Abrielle[/name_f]. All four of these can be shortened to [name_u]Abby[/name_u], but give her a more unique option should she want to use her full name.

I teach at a dance studio and I feel like we seem to be overrun with little [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]/Abbys. Sorry.

I’m from [name_f]Florida[/name_f], so this probably isn’t helpful, but I don’t know many little [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]'s around my area. Its seems like they are all older 14+. My cousin is an [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] and it fits her. It truly is a lovely name, and I don’t think popularity is really a problem. Top 5 is where the name becomes too overused, so names like [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] are definitely heard all the time.

Other names:
[name_f]Abra[/name_f]
[name_u]Abilene[/name_u]
Abela
[name_f]Ronia[/name_f]
[name_f]Leah[/name_f]
[name_f]Bethany[/name_f]
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Sarah[/name_f]
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f]
Emuna
[name_f]Levana[/name_f]
Meira
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]

[name_u]Alexis[/name_u] and[name_f]Alina[/name_f] are not as popular. Maybe [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] as a middle name

[name_u]Abilene[/name_u]…[name_f]Abrielle[/name_f]…[name_u]Abbey[/name_u]
