How popular is Isla, actually?!

We are thinking of naming our second [name_f]Isla[/name_f]!

But I’m concerened about the raising popularity! [name_m]How[/name_m] many little ones do you know named [name_f]Isla[/name_f]? I know it’s 124 or so on the ss list, but I just don’t want to choose the next [name_f]Emma[/name_f]!

Also, what do you think about [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] as siblings?

Thanks!!!

I’ve never met an [name_f]Isla[/name_f] or anyone considering it [name_m]IRL[/name_m]. [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] fit beautifully!

You might want to add up alternate spellings or names that sound similar to get a better sense of how popular it will feel.

I think it all depends on where you are i know 4 under the age of 5 otherwise have only ever seen it on [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_m]Fisher[/name_m]

Could also consider less heard [name_f]Ayla[/name_f]

I love [name_f]Isla[/name_f]! But I think is very popular, I know 6 little girls named [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and we are not so big on popular names over here, that’s why we are naming our fourth [name_f]Ayla[/name_f]. It is one of those names that are popular for a reason though, it’s a fantastic name.

I know a lot of little kids and only one 5 year old [name_f]Isla[/name_f]

I’ve only met one little [name_f]Isla[/name_f], and that would have been 10 years ago. I don’t think it’s going to be like [name_f]Emma[/name_f] or [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] etc.

One of my cousins and a close friend have a daughter named [name_f]Isla[/name_f]. I also know three little [name_f]Ayla[/name_f]'s, ranging in age from about 3 to 8. So I think both names are relatively popular in [name_m]New[/name_m] Zealand at least, but as far as I know, none of them have another [name_f]Isla[/name_f] or [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] in their class/kindergarten.

Look at the data for your state and surrounding states. I’ve never met an [name_f]Isla[/name_f].

I’m in WA (aus) and I personally know 3 under age of 7. I do remember this one time we were at the park and the girls there were asking each other’s names and 4 out of the 6 girls were named [name_f]Isla[/name_f] (!!)

Well. In the US, as you say, it ranked at 126 in 2016, which is 2504 babies.

But a few things to consider:

  1. It’s risen from 623rd spot on 2008 so it’s on a definite (and fast) trajectory.

  2. In the UK, it’s actually the 4th most popular name for girls, with 3476 babies given the name in 2016. There does tend to be a lot of overlap - of the top 20 names in 2016, 11 of the US top 20 also appear on the UK list.

  3. If you look at the top 20 names for girls in both countries, there are LOTS of vowel and L-heavy names, and names ending in an A sound. In fact, 10 of the US top 20 start with a vowel, and 10 also end in an A sound. And another nine feature L sounds quite prominently.

So if I was going to predict, I would say it’s probably likely to end up in the top 100 and maybe top 50 names in the next few years. But is that the end of the world? Probably not! It’s not like [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] or [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], each name is given to such a small percentage of the population now. But if you like it partly because it feels quirky or unusual, I’d prepare myself for the eventuality it might become pretty popular.

I know 2 [name_f]Isla[/name_f]'s - both born in the last 18 months. Also heard of third (but I don’t know the child/parents).

I suppose it depends where you’re located. I’m in Australia.

I know of one Isla in real life, she’s probably 5 or so.

I’m in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f] and it’s really popular here. I think that might be because it’s of Scottish origin though? I guess it depends where you are

In [name_f]England[/name_f] Isla has become very popular over the past years. I know several girls under the age of 10 with this name. I think it has probably become just as common as Emma now. It all depends where you’re from

I know one…I know it’s becoming popular but it’s still beautiful!

I do not know any Islas…I only know a couple Emmas. I think [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] make a wonderful sibling set.

I have known a bunch of Emmas, but I have never met an [name_f]Isla[/name_f]. I think it’s a beautiful name!

[name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] make such sweet, adorable sisters!!

I think it depends where you live, and how many children you know. I live in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f], but I don’t know many children, so I only know 1 (she’s 10). But I have friends who work with children, and they know lots. So here, I’d say it was very popular. However, I think it goes nicely with [name_f]Rose[/name_f], and, assuming you are in the USA, they have about the same popularity.

I’ve met one [name_f]Isla[/name_f] (she was in [name_m]Washington[/name_m] state and is probably about 3 now) and one [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] (she was in [name_m]New[/name_m] Mexico and is probably about 18 now). Aside from those two, I haven’t met any others.
