I am falling in love with [name]Sylvia[/name]. We are expecting DD 2 in [name]November[/name]. I am really having trouble finding a name I like as well as [name]Ramona[/name], but [name]Sylvia[/name] does something for me.
Here is my question? Are there a ton of little Sylvias? I am sort of obsessed with the name not being popular. When you add together the Silvias and the Sylvias it would actually be around #400 in terms of popularity. What does this equate to? I don’t need a completely unique name but I really don’t want her to be [name]Silvia[/name] C or [name]Silvia[/name] with an I (prefer the original spelling), when she goes to school. [name]How[/name] many little Sylvias do you know? If you have a little [name]Sylvia[/name] how often do you run into another?
I love [name]Sylvia[/name]! I want to like the original spelling, [name]Silvia[/name], but it just doesn’t have the elegant appeal of [name]Sylvia[/name] to me. I don’t know any little girls with the name, although at a state-wide church event a couple summers ago I came across a little adorable black girl whose name was [name]Sylvia[/name]. I know, because she was wearing a name tag. The only other [name]Sylvia[/name] I’ve ever come across in person was someone about 5-10 grades ahead of me in my small private [name]Christian[/name] school (that went from Pre-K to 10th grade–I think she was in 10th grade when I was in 1st or 2nd…)–she eventually became my religion and computer teacher, throughout middle and high school. It’s such a classic but unexpected name, I’d really love to meet one. The average is that there will really only be 1 [name]Sophia[/name] per public school grade (when I did the math, this didn’t include charter schools, Catholic schools, [name]Christian[/name]-but-not-Catholic schools, private secular schools, home schools, etc.!), so I can imagine that at spot number 400 (with only about 700 births in the country–which, btw, is only a fraction of the number of Sophias that were born!) wouldn’t be very bad at all.
[name]Ramona[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name] are very pretty together!
[name]Sylvia[/name]/[name]Silvia[/name] and [name]Ramona[/name] are a fantastic sibset! I really like the [name]Silvia[/name] from Two Gentlemen of [name]Verona[/name], too. I can’t be terribly helpful about the popularity, except to say that I’ve never met a [name]Sylvia[/name] and don’t really expect to (though I’d be delighted if I ever did!)
In 2005, [name]Silvia[/name] was No# 990 in the US (it’s wasn’t in the top 1,000 last year). [name]Sylvia[/name] was No# 526 in 2012 (that’s only 572 girls). I don’t think you have to worry. I know only one [name]Sylvia[/name] in her 80’s. I think it’s a pretty name that just rolls off the tongue! I think it has a retro feel like [name]Ramona[/name].
[name]Silvia[/name] is one of my favorite names! I’ve been teaching preschool/kindergarten for a few years and have yet to meet a little [name]Silvia[/name]. (I prefer the [name]Silvia[/name] spelling as well)
I work with children and I’ve never had a [name]Sylvia[/name]/[name]Silvia[/name] in my class so I don’t think it’s too popular, and it’s a gorgeous name!
I’m not a fan…puts me in mind of silver-hair, 1970’s, and ‘silly’. But I think I used to like it in childhood (maybe I thought the singer was pretty…).
I have a 4 year-old [name]Sylvia[/name] and we’ve never met another one in our area around her same age. We get absolutely nothing but compliments on her name. We did meet a little girl about 2 years older than her that was named [name]Sylvia[/name], but she lives a state away.
[name]Edit[/name] to add:
There is a lady named [name]Sylvia[/name] that works at our local Costco. I’d guess she’s in her 30’s.
[name]Love[/name], [name]Love[/name], [name]Love[/name] [name]Ramona[/name] and [name]Silvia[/name] together! I have actually never met a [name]Silvia[/name], 400 is not very popular at all.
Thanks everyone! I am really in love with [name]Silvia[/name], it is the only one name on our short list that really fits this baby in my head (I don’t really know how to explain it). We have a short list with a few others that we love but this is the front runner. None of the others on our short list are in the top 1000 but I am trying not to let the ranking talk me out of it.
My grandmothers name is [name]Sylvia[/name] [name]Lillian[/name]. She is in her late 70s. Have not met any others. I think it’s a nice choice, as its history makes it well known all over the world without being overused.
[name]Silvia[/name] & [name]Ramona[/name] sound fantastic together! I have only met one [name]Sylvie[/name] (not [name]Silvia[/name]/[name]Sylvia[/name]) in my lifetime. I’m
am 30 years old! So not popular at all in my opinion.
I really like [name]Silvia[/name], although I personally like the spelling [name]Sylvia[/name]. I think the name sounds darling with [name]Ramona[/name] (which I adore as well!). I have never met a [name]Sylvia[/name], but I do remember learning about someone named [name]Sylvia[/name] in one of my high school classes. I liked the name so much that it has stuck with me the past couple of years.
[name]Both[/name] Sylvias I know happen to be middle aged and Hispanic (though this is in [name]Texas[/name], with a large hispanic population). I think it’s a good name and not popular at all.
I’ve only met one ever and she was a woman in her 60s.
I think [name]Ramona[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name] are such beautiful names for sisters. I hope that you use this one!
Edited to add … I hope you don’t let the combined popularity of the two spellings deter you. My 3rd daughter has a name that is ranked in the mid-300s overall and I’ve never met another little girl around her age with her name. I haven’t even met that many adults with her name either - and it was much more popular with older generations.
[name]Sylvie[/name] is one of the top names on my list so I highly approve of [name]Sylvia[/name]/[name]Silvia[/name] and think it is a beautiful sibset with [name]Ramona[/name].
If you do the math together [name]Sylvia[/name]/[name]Silvia[/name] were 754 births in 2012 which works out to 0.0392 which works out to 3.92 (let’s call it 4) girls out of 10,000, so 1 in 2500 girls is named [name]Sylvia[/name] or [name]Silvia[/name]. So I don’t think it’s too likely you’ll meet a bunch of little Sylvias. I say go for it!
