Why do I love boy names that seem destined for the Top 20?! Right now, [name]Silas[/name] is #183 and it seems to be climbing every year. [name]Do[/name] you think the popularity spiked because of Weeds and it will eventually die down? Or is it destined to be super popular? I don’t know anyone named [name]Silas[/name] but I have heard Moms shout “[name]Silas[/name]!” in the mall/grocery store a few times. What do you think?
I feel it will die down. To me, it seems like it’s part of the return to all things farmy and organic… vintage bread boxes and pitchforks hung on walls in urban restaurants. But that trend is simmering down, and I think [name]Silas[/name] will fade back into obscurity. Such a beautiful name. Dry in a way, almost minerally-sounding to me. That makes no sense, but that’s how I think of it. Like flint. [name]Silas[/name] [name]Flint[/name]… hm.
I like [name]Silas[/name]. It is the name of a major road near me, so no one around me has used this as a name. I do think the trend will die down a bit. I still think it’s great!
Since it’s my husband’s favorite name, I often ponder the same thing. It is the character on Weeds but that show is in its last season. It’s also the name of the Uncle on Duck Dynasty - a redneck sort of reality show. That’s really what turned me off of it. I don’t know if it will break the top 100. I guess only time will tell. It’s definitely been climbing. No one I mention the name to really likes it though. So, I guess that’s a check in the “pro” column.
It’s hard for me to say because I don’t know of any little boys named [name]Silas[/name]. I always thought it was more of a Nameberry name than a “real world” name. I looked at number of births from 2000 to 2011 to get an idea of how steeply [name]Silas[/name] is rising.
2000: 328
2001: 375
2002: 579
2003: 559
2004: 611
2005: 659
2006: 798
2007: 937
2008: 1068
2009: 1371
2010: 1623
2011: 2081
[name]Silas[/name] is definitely a name on the rise. I noticed in 2011 that [name]Silas[/name] sits between [name]Tanner[/name] and [name]Eduardo[/name] on the charts. You’re technically more likely to meet a boy called [name]Tanner[/name] than a boy called [name]Silas[/name].
You’ve mentioned before that you live in a hip, artsy area of [name]North[/name] [name]Carolina[/name]. If you’re in the area I think you’re in, then I can see [name]Silas[/name] being a popular choice there. It has a woodsy, rugged, kind of folk music feel about it; essentially, it’s the perfect name for a mountain-dwelling hipster baby. Overall, I don’t see [name]Silas[/name] ever entering the top 80. The top 100 is a definite possibility, but [name]Silas[/name] has a very particular image (in my opinion) and doesn’t appeal to a variety of tastes like [name]Lily[/name] or [name]Jackson[/name] might. I could see [name]Silas[/name] becoming a hipster favorite but not a general population favorite if that makes sense.
[name]Silas[/name] is one of my favorites too. I love it with [name]Rowan[/name].
I think it will stay in the 100’s, [name]Silas[/name] and [name]Rowan[/name] are superb together.
I love [name]Silas[/name], but decided not to use it because it’s so popular and I fear it’s only going to get even more popular. I can def. see it in the top 100 within 2 years.
Wow, those numbers are a little disheartening. But maybe it will stay a hipster fave and not become super popular.
You’re right about where I live by the way. “[name]Paris[/name] of the South” haha.
I don’t know any [name]Silas[/name] and never have. I have only ever heard the name on here and on the television soap Hollyoaks.
I think maple’s assessment is spot on. It definitely appeals to a specific set of parents, but it’s a set that is growing My daughter’s doc is kind of a hipster/hippie hybrid, and her son’s name is [name]Silas[/name]. I don’t live in an area that’s all that friendly to that set of parents, but the one time I heard the name at a playground, the parents certainly fit the stereotype, and sister’s name was [name]Juniper[/name]. All that said, [name]Rowan[/name] and [name]Silas[/name] are pretty great together.
