I live in [name]Canada[/name] and my name is [name]Alycia[/name] (a different way of spelling [name]Alicia[/name] or [name]Aleisha[/name], etc) but people ALWAYS mispronounce my name or don’t even bother trying. [name]One[/name] of the pronunciations that make me cringe is A-li-sha (the ‘i’ pronounced as in ‘hit’). [name]One[/name] of my high school teachers always called me this and it always made the rest of the class laugh at me And one of my old co-workers always called me [name]Alice[/name] for no apparent reason! Suffice it to say, when people have a hard time pronouncing my name, I just get them to call me [name]Aly[/name]. I still love my name though, I think it’s very unique
I really wish people would think before they speak! I had the same problem once. My name is [name]Lindsay[/name] and I went with my mom to order my birthday cake. When she spelled my name for the baker he looked back at us and said that is a pretty screwed up way to spell that! I was floored! Not only is my spelling the traditional spelling but I have seen so much worse ([name]Lynzi[/name], [name]Lynzee[/name], LynZ and the list goes on and on). I don’t think they even realize exactly how rude what is coming out of their moth really is.
when i started school as a child my mom had to deal with it cause i had at eacher out right refuse to say or learn to spell my name…
It it makes you feel better, [name]Meghan[/name]/ [name]Megan[/name] in [name]America[/name] is pronounced [name]May[/name]-gan. And [name]Meagan[/name]/ [name]Meaghan[/name] (MEE-gan) is the uncommon one!
Hear, hear!
Yes, but I shrug it off because I love my name.
There was this lady in the mall that laughed at my middle name the whole time she was personalizing a grain of rice (popular at that time) for my necklace. My middle name is LéChé, and I was taught to pronounce it as La [name]Shay[/name]. She went on and on between her laughter stating that it meant milk in Spanish. I can understand her, but at the same time it was not pronounced the same. Any who my mother named all three of her daughters with “L” as the middle initial; however, mines is the “L” diminutive of her middle name–although spelled slightly, yet recognizable. No matter how it is spelled or said, my mom blessed me with the name, so therefor, it’s special to me.
Oh well, My nn is [name]CoCo[/name], so I always joke that my name describes me somewhat well. Milk Chocolate. ;p
That was extremely rude! In [name]Canada[/name] we pronounce [name]Megan[/name] (meg-in). I’m [name]Eden[/name] and I have people constantly calling me [name]Ed[/name]-in or [name]Aidan[/name] or [name]Edith[/name] or [name]Ethan[/name]. But other than the mispronouciation I like my name. Besides it’s an honest mistake if you pronounce somebody’s name wrong.
That’s so rude, and I’m sorry that happened to you. It’s happened to me when I was growing up in New [name]York[/name] because I’d get people from the carribean who spoke french and would say “But that’s a boy’s name!” because it’s a double barrelled hyphenated name starting with [name]Jean[/name] which are male in French. I always get it mispronounced and misspelled, plus ending my nickname Jeanni on an I gets lots of misspellings, even from my own family.
A friend recently had a daughter named [name]Athena[/name] [name]Rose[/name] and her grandmother REFUSED to call her [name]Athena[/name] because she said it was “too weird”.
I’ve learned to answer to Molly, Holly, Dolly, Poppy, anything. One memorable morning at work I spent answering to Peggy. I’d be a little confused faced with Maeghan, because I’ve only ever seen Megan or Meaghan, but wouldn’t dare be outright rude to someone who’s spent her life with the name and has in all likelihood grown very attached to it. Polly Put The Kettle On & Polly Wolly Doodle All The Day were repeated at me far too often for that, and it’s probably affected how I see names and their effect on the bearer. Anything that is remotely teaseworthy is a serious cause for consideration on my list and when my opinion is requested, because I know first hand just how annoying it is not to be taken seriously because of one’s name. I don’t like nicknames as given names, for example, because I always wished my name was officially longer.
I think this is less about your name than it is about that bank teller’s attitude. If I owned a business, I’d never want my employees making comments like that to customers. I’d complain to the manager.
Yeah that was rude of the lady and she’s wrong about no one ever pronouncing it correctly. I always thought the name was supposed to be pronounced “[name]MAE[/name]-gan”, it wouldn’t have even crossed my mind to pronounce it “MEE-gan” particularly given the spelling.
I don’t have an unusual name at all, actually it’s very common. But I had a TA in 7th grade straight out tell me that I do not look like a [name]Jessica[/name]…umm thanks? It’s only been my name for 12 years! Now 24!
I also have a niece [name]Kira[/name] (I wasn’t too fond of the name when my sister told me she was naming her daughter that but I’ve gotten used to it) but what really bugs me is that my dad always pronounces it [name]Kera[/name]. Urgh, I always correct him.
dear maeghan:
i love your name pronounced may-ghan. and i think you need a new bank!!! you shouldn’t have to put up with such rudeness–especially when you’re the customer!
There are rude people everywhere and people like that will point out anything. She just happened to see your name. Try to ignore it and I am sorry. Your name is nice! :).
I would not dwell on it at all.

Has anyone else realized that this thread is a few months old?
Finally!! Some one who understands!, My name is [name]Marisa[/name] ( mA-[name]REE[/name]-sA) and its so uncommon where i live ( the US) it’s much more common where my parents are from ( Uruguay and [name]Cuba[/name]) some veriations that people have mistaken my name for are [name]Marissa[/name], [name]Marcia[/name],Merces,[name]Maria[/name],[name]Marie[/name],[name]Mary[/name],[name]Melissa[/name],[name]Mariska[/name],[name]Marta[/name] ect and I had a sub in school who just couldn’t get my name right it was always something else. But I think name pronunciation is one of those things where you just have to be really blunt about, if its not your name don’t except people calling you by it. I know it’s a popular trend to give your kids youneek names, and some of them turn out awesome but sometimes people over do it.
Thanks southern.maple who are these timewasters that suck innocent berries into completed threads?

I think [name_f]Maegan[/name_f] is quite lovely! I’ve heard [name_f]Megan[/name_f] pronounced MEH-gan and Mee-gan(no real emphasis on either syllable, didn’t really care for it) but I think yours is my favorite!
