[name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce [name_m]Augusten[/name_m]/[name_m]Augustin[/name_m]? I first thought it was (AW-gus-ten) but I see online it may be more common as (uh-[name_u]GUS[/name_u]-ten). [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think either is acceptable or is there one that is more accepted and the other is incorrect? Thoughts on the name in general? Preferred pronunciation? Preferred spelling? Thank you!
The spelling makes the difference here. If it’s [name_m]Augusten[/name_m], like [name_m]Augusten[/name_m] [name_m]Burroughs[/name_m], then I would pronounce it identically to [name_m]Augustine[/name_m]: uh-[name_u]GUS[/name_u]-ten.
[name_m]Augustin[/name_m]-without-the-accent-over-the-I is the Spanish spelling, and is ah-goos-TEEN. The same way most Americans pronounce St [name_m]Augustine[/name_m], [name_f]Florida[/name_f].
I think honestly I prefer [name_m]Augustine[/name_m], the usual English spelling, but if you don’t want it pronounced like the Floridian city then [name_m]Augusten[/name_m].
Thanks, blade! So is there no spelling that you feel would get to the pronunciation (AW-gus-ten) - like the word [name_u]August[/name_u] with an extra syllable tacked on? Not sure how I feel about that pronunciation, but I am curious!
au-[name_u]GUS[/name_u]-tin (with the short “i” sound) is the proper pronunciation of you’re going for the saint’s name. AU-gus-teen or au-gus-TEEN is a city in [name_f]Florida[/name_f]. HTH
Did you like [name_m]Austin[/name_m]? It’s a medieval derivative of [name_m]Augustine[/name_m], with the stress on the first syllable like [name_u]August[/name_u].
