How to pronounce Evangeline- Leen or Line ??

I knew a girl with this name, and everyone called her Evange “lynn”

I’ve heard of the name before, I just have never heard it pronounced by anyone and Leen, line and lyn are all possibilities it seems. Thanks for the information everyone!

I also pronounce it -leen and I am American.

  • leen. -line sounds strange.

I say -leen for [name]Evangeline[/name] and -line for [name]Caroline[/name]/[name]Madeline[/name].

I say -leen, too. I think the first few times I saw [name]Evangeline[/name], I said it with the -line ending, same with [name]Emmeline[/name], but with [name]Evangeline[/name] [name]Lilly[/name] still being fairly well known, and [name]Henry[/name] Wadsworth [name]Longfellow[/name]'s poem, [name]Evangeline[/name], and the [name]Evangeline[/name] in The [name]Princess[/name] and the Frog, all pronounced with the -leen ending, as far as I know, I would think that the -leen ending would be used much more often (if not almost exclusively).

  • leen here too

ah interesting. I think I’ve seen every Disney movie expect [name]Princess[/name] and the Frog. I keep falling asleep after she turns into a frog haha.
[name]Evangeline[/name] [name]Lilly[/name] played [name]Kate[/name] on Lost (which I’m suddenly super into, about 8 years too late)

  • leen
I’m from the UK and have known Carolines’ but it never crossed my mind to pronounce [name]Evangeline[/name] in the same way. It just sounds wrong!

Ditto. Although I’ve heard it pronounced both of -leen and -line as well.

This is my step moms name and she pronounces it with the lynn sound, which I like better than leen or line.

I’ve always thought it was -leen.

  • leen. I can’t imagine anyone pronouncing it -line.

I pronounce it with “line”. The “leen” pronounciation has never crossed my mind. I don’t think I like the “leen” way. Sounds kind of made up.

Because this name is primarily Cajun and used in the states more than anywhere else and the Cajuns say “eeen” I would say that’s the correct prn, especially considering its other roots (spelled this way) are French Canadian and French where they both say Eeen".

I’m in Australia and I pronounce it ‘leen’ as well. Only one of the ‘line’ ending names (eg. [name]Emmeline[/name], [name]Clementine[/name], [name]Caroline[/name] etc) that I pronounce as ‘leen’, the rest are ‘line’ in my mind. Agree with the other posters who said that the ‘leen’ pronounciation sounds prettier too!

I know a girl with this name and it’s definitely leen, her nn is evie (ee-vee)

Wow I didn’t expect all the answers to this, lol! I’ve never heard anyone pronounce the name before so I just wasn’t sure. Sounds like leen is most common and correct, I guess but others have heard line and lynn. I personally like “line”. I’m not sure why. I don’t care for “leen” endings too often though, maybe thats why? Anyhow, I think we can close this one down.
