Trying to choose a name for baby #2 that is due in [name_u]November[/name_u], brother to [name_m]Luther[/name_m]. I previously posted a poll for our top five names ([name_m]Magnus[/name_m], [name_m]Gregor[/name_m], [name_m]Ulric[/name_m], Corvus and [name_m]Tiberius[/name_m]). So far [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] and [name_m]Gregor[/name_m] seem to be the top two favorites. Our only issue with [name_m]Gregor[/name_m] is the pronunciation. Hubby pronounces it like gre-GOR and I pronounce it like GRE-ger. I am curious as to how other people pronounce it. We are Canadian, not sure if that helps at all.
Please let me know how you prefer it pronounced? Thank you!
I agree with this. I’ve only ever heard it said with the emphasis on the 1st syllable.
Though I’m sure it’s different in different countries.
The 2nd syllable emphasis sound very Eastern European to me–like Gregorovitch, etc.
greg-OR sounds a bit silly / pretentious (said by English speakers) and I don’t like the heavy emphasis on the R sound especially in a Canadian accent which uses the R sound heavily anyway.
I have always heard it as [name_m]GREG[/name_m]-er and that is my natural preference. I really like the name [name_m]Gregor[/name_m] pronounced that way. I bet I could get used to another pronunciation, but I would probably assume my preferred one on first look.
