How usable is Edie?

I did what I never do and looked at reddits opinion on [name_f]Edie[/name_f] As always the top comments are not positive. Most prefer [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and think [name_f]Edie[/name_f] will be misread [name_u]Eddie[/name_u]. Is this true? I have a great big emotional attachment to it so it doesn’t really matter, but is it travel friendly?

[name_m]Just[/name_m] overthinking my list!

Thanks

Maybe I’m missing something, but I’m not sure why [name_f]Edie[/name_f] wouldn’t be usable!
Reddit is always harsh with names, try not to take it to heart, [name_f]Edie[/name_f] is so lovely!
I know a teenage [name_f]Edie[/name_f], and sometimes people accidentally pronounce her name like [name_u]Eddie[/name_u] but they always get it right after being corrected.

While it could be read as [name_f]Edie[/name_f], It could depend on the language.

This might come across as hard, but I’m being practical. I’m going to hide it because it contains slightly sensitive stuff based on how it looks written down.

Summary

What is something to consider is, what would other children think of it?. While I’m pretty sure it’s pronouced ee-dee, seeing it written down is another thing as it’s basically an extra letter added onto a word which is far from appropriate as a name. Are other kids likely to pass a comment, and will she get any funny looks. It’s a little like [name_f]Violet[/name_f] being one letter away from Violent. (Unice somehow got an insulting nickname which only contains 4 of her letters and not even in the same order, but I blame that on dyslexia)

Despite this, I think [name_f]Edie[/name_f] is very cute, and like i said, how it’s percieved depends on languages.

[name_f]Edie[/name_f] feels totally usable to me! Honestly, I wouldn’t have thought to question its usability at all!

I think people on Reddit will be negative about any name, unfortunately. Maybe some people might say [name_u]Eddie[/name_u] occasionally but I think [name_f]Edie[/name_f] is a fairly recognizable name, even if it’s not currently common. It also looks a lot like the more common [name_u]Eden[/name_u] and [name_f]Evie[/name_f] which are usually pronounced similarly (at least in English).

Maybe I’m missing something obvious, but I can’t figure out what word you’re referring to in your hidden section?

I think [name_f]Edie[/name_f] is totally usable, especially as @EagleEyes mentions, it’s so close to [name_f]Evie[/name_f], which is very common (where I am, at least).

I also wouldn’t put too much faith in what Reddit says.

I’ll take that as a positive thing. It isn’t even anything i’d point out myself.

I do believe that nobody has the right to tease a name anyway so it shouldn’t even matter. [name_f]Edie[/name_f] is a pretty name that will fit her from birth into old age. It does look alot like [name_u]Eden[/name_u] and [name_f]Evie[/name_f].

I also wouldn’t trust any forum other than nb for name advice. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though i’ve never used any of them, I’ve heard that they can be very harsh.

The main ā€œwordā€ I’ve heard people say is it sounds like ED aka an eating disorder. However I had an ED in the past and [name_f]Ana[/name_f] is a more triggering word on the subject to me. the other comment is literally just ā€œthat’s not a name.ā€ :joy: if you bring up [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and evie the Reddit users probably would say those aren’t full names either. :woman_facepalming:t2:

I’ve encountered two girls called [name_f]Edie[/name_f]! Both had it as their full name! I will say, one did get misheard as ā€˜Evie’ when she introduced herself, but it was an easy correction. For what it’s work, it ranks at 115 in the UK currently (not too far behind [name_f]Edith[/name_f] itself) so I don’t think it’s too unfamiliar.

my only doubt

I love [name_f]Edie[/name_f] but the ED / eating disorder makes it feel unusable for me personally (not as a name in general) - I guess it just depends on your associations and experiences of those around you, as I don’t think that’s what everyone’s mind goes to

[name_f]Edie[/name_f] is perfectly usuable in my opinion. In today’s multicultural world, it would be ridiculous to get het up about how other languages might pronounce it. Half the time we cannot pronounce their names either!

Gosh I live in the land of nicknames! I actually would be surprised to encounter an [name_f]Edie[/name_f] who was actually [name_f]Edith[/name_f] :joy::joy:

I know a few Edie’s the name is completely usable the only issue they’ve encountered is people mishearing the name and saying [name_f]Evie[/name_f] (she’s more popular) never [name_u]Eddie[/name_u]. I think you’d be fine!

i’ve known several girls called edie (i’m in england where she’s just outside the top 100 atm) and i think it’s lovely !! there are a couple of reasons i could see it being considered unusable/undesirable, but they don’t actually affect my opinion at all - i see them but i don’t get them. ā€œtoo close to eddieā€ is not one of those reasons. i think edie is a gorgeous choice.

I love it. Would pick it over [name_f]Edith[/name_f]. [name_u]Will[/name_u] occasionally be misspelled or mispronounced but I wouldn’t think a lot.

I think it’s definitely usable!

I’m in agreement with others that the ED/eating disorder association makes it unusable for me personally at least ATM, but I love the name. I’d be so happy to meet an [name_f]Edie[/name_f]! As a nickname or as a full name.

I’ve met a fair few little Edies and I think it’s great as a nickname or full name! It’s in the same category as names like [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] or [name_u]Billie[/name_u] to me – cute, but with enough punch to feel strong as a standalone too.

i think it’s usable (and gorgeous)!! it might be mispronounced sometimes but it’s easily correctable.

[name_f]Edie[/name_f] does make me think [name_u]Eddie[/name_u] but I don’t think its a big deal. It does sound the same as ED which could stand for erectile dysfunction. But this isn’t what comes to mind. Actually I think of the woman in the original Mummy movie and she was great! [name_f]My[/name_f] only concern is that it’s very nicknamey and feels very old fashioned/ or hipster?? to me as an American. Its also not terribly feminine in my head but fun and quirky.
