How Usable is Mavis?

Hello there!

[name_u]Ever[/name_u] since I watched a movie with a character named [name_f]Mavis[/name_f], I’ve been crushing on it. It’s not my usual style at ALL but there’s something about it that I can’t put my finger on. I just love it. I don’t know how to explain it. However, when I mentioned the name to a friend she said that it’s not even a grandma name anymore, but a great-grandma name. I’m not sure I agree with that - I’ve never known anyone with the name in real life so I’ve got no context for it in that way. I guess, I’m just wondering, with these sort of ‘vintage’ names coming back into vogue and with other similar choices like [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] or [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] starting to reappear, do you think [name_f]Mavis[/name_f] is usable? Or is it forever going to be a(n unfairly labeled) ‘great-grandma’ name?

I think [name_f]Mavis[/name_f] is fabulous. It’s a spunky vintage name with a very modern sound, a natural candidate for revival given the popularity of [name_f]Ava[/name_f] and [name_f]Maeve[/name_f].

I like it a lot!

I thought it was a grandma name too until I watched Hotel Transylvania, now I love [name_f]Mavis[/name_f], [name_f]Avis[/name_f], [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]. I think it a very usable name and would love to see it used

I really like it too. I would probably make sure to put it with a more common, feminine middle though.

So glad to hear other people like [name_f]Mavis[/name_f] too! And its really funny, because I heard it in Hotel Transylvania as well, when I went with my younger siblings to see it. And I hadn’t even thought about middle names to go with it. [name_f]My[/name_f] immediate thought was [name_f]Mavis[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], but I’m not sure how well that goes together. It might just be because I’m currently a little bit in love with [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. Any suggestions?

Hmm…
[name_f]Mavis[/name_f] isn’t my style. I think this name despite vintage revival still feels dated and I prefer the likes of [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Maple[/name_f] & Mabe I just think these names are more appealing in sound compared to the ‘vis’ sound which still feels dated.

I think [name_f]Mavis[/name_f] is quite nice. I’d be more inclined to use it as a middle name although it would be nice to see it as a first name.

It’s no worse than [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], I guess…both names make me think of a 70’s era teen in kulats (sp?) and clogs. I’m not a fan.

I love [name_f]Mavis[/name_f]! I think it could become the next [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], it does have that trendy sound, the may beginning, the v, the is ending like in [name_f]Alice[/name_f]. In fact to me, it is exactly like [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in sound and feel terms. However I don’t have it on my short list as a first because it isn’t even in the top 1000 and I try to strike the middle ground in familiarity with a name so I avoid names that aren’t used much.

I think it is very usable. People I think will say it’s an old lady name or dislike it until they get to know a little girl with the name and then they will like it, if they’re into vintage names.

Um… were you watching Hotel Transylvania? Because, that’s where I fell in love with [name_f]Mavis[/name_f]. I definitely think she’s ready for a comeback. I really see her just as that character thought, spunky teen, ready to explore the world, wanting to have fun, aware of family traditions, mysterious, punk-rock, and open to the world.

I’d say your friend doesn’t know what she’s talking about! [name_f]Mavis[/name_f] is really useable and AWESOME. Also my husband likes it and usually he likes very common classic names.

PS: Only read the second page where you mentioned Hotel Transylvania after writing this.

Was searching the site for [name_f]Mavis[/name_f], and this thread came up. I think it’s usable as I’m pretty sure we are using it for our baby due in a couple weeks. I like names that are a bit off the mainstream, but still are easy to spell and pronounce. I have never seen the movie referenced but did have a typing program as a kid called “mavis beacon teaches typing.” Not sure where I got the name from recently but I think it it fits well with our other kids’ names and our last name. I do know of a couple [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]'s, but have never met a [name_f]Mavis[/name_f]. ([name_m]Both[/name_m] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]'s have Irish born parents.) We will be using [name_f]Carmela[/name_f] as a mn to honor both of my husband’s grandmothers. So her name will be old fashioned, but her sister [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Esther[/name_f] has an old lady name too.
