How usable is the name Ursula? Thanks clever girls and boys

We aren’t thinking of it for our baby since we chose a name already but it’s just an interesting one I had on my list maybe for next time. Anyways, do you think because of little mermaid [name]Ursula[/name] is unusable? I was told kids would call her sea witch and she would hate me and want to change her name. Thoughts?

It’s actually one of my favourite names (and my fiance hates it). I think it’s absolutely usable, and very cool. But I haven’t watched The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid since it came out, I didn’t even remember there was anyone in there called [name]Ursula[/name] (I thought the bad one was [name]Vanessa[/name], which is another cool name). I think of D.H. [name]Lawrence[/name], [name]Ursula[/name] Andress and [name]Ursula[/name] von Rydningsvard (if I spell that correctly).

You can’t not use the name used for the bad guys in books and movies as they usually get the best names.

Hmm… I’m not very keen on [name]Ursula[/name], but I think that is mostly due to the sound of the first syllable. I do think of The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid, then [name]Ursula[/name] K. [name]Le[/name] Guin, and finally [name]Ursula[/name] Andress.

I think [name]Ursula[/name] is wonderful, substantial, handsome. But I like [name]Olga[/name] too, so maybe I’m not a good judge.
The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid …I don’t know if kids today are even watching it. And was there an [name]Ursula[/name] in the [name]Hans[/name] [name]Christian[/name] [name]Anderson[/name] story?

If I was named [name]Ursula[/name], I would hate it. Too many [name]Little[/name] Mermaid associations.

I like the name, just not the associations.

I actually just watched the [name]Little[/name] Mermaid yesterday (I love Disney movies and [name]Ariel[/name] was one of my favorites when I was little). So I would say that [name]Ursula[/name] is unusable, too much association. But besides that, I just don’t like the sound of it anyway.

I always think of friends actually haha because of phoebes sister. I think [name]Vanessa[/name] was [name]Ursula[/name]'s name in human form towards the end it was her fake name so [name]Ariel[/name] wouldn’t know it was her.

Ditto. I wouldn’t personally use it, but I don’t think it’s totally unusable.

I see both the good and bad of [name]Ursula[/name]. Who knows how much the [name]Little[/name] Mermaid will mean to the generation that your little one will grow up with? The association could be faded a bit by then. You might want to consider [name]Ursuline[/name] or [name]Ursulina[/name] as alternatives if you are bothered by it.

Well, ‘The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid’ is one of those Disney classics, so I doubt there will be that many children in the newer gens that don’t know of or haven’t seen ‘The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid’. That being said, I still think it’s pretty usable. And I think it sounds pretty cool.

I think [name]Ursula[/name] has a better chance of eventually divorcing from the “The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid” association than [name]Ariel[/name], actually (I like both names). I love it because it has its own sound without being too outlandish and has a storied history.

Kids will tease each other over everything, but I don’t see the teasing becoming nasty/traumatizing just over something like that. If it does bother her (and let’s be honest, the vast majority of kids will dislike their names during their adolescence at some point and feel said names don’t “fit” them), it seems like the exact sort of name she’d grow to love and appreciate as she gets older.

I absolutely think [name]Ursula[/name] is usable. It’s unusual without being unknown and it has a smooth, rich sound. It’s like fine dark chocolate.
