How usable is this really?

DH and I really like Asriel/[name_m]Azriel[/name_m] for a boy. But we are aware that the similar [name_m]Azrael[/name_m] is the angel of death…

Does that make Asriel/[name_m]Azriel[/name_m] unusable?

We already have a son named [name_m]Jovan[/name_m] and a daughter named [name_f]Phaedra[/name_f], if it matters at all.

It’s out there, but with your other children’s names (I approve btw!) it fits really well.

[name_m]Azriel[/name_m] is similar to [name_m]Azrael[/name_m], but I don’t think that’s a reason not to use it. To give a parallel example, the name [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is very similar to [name_f]ISIS[/name_f] and is still climbing up the popularity charts despite the terrorist group. I think it’s a lovely, unusual name and would wear really well.

My taste in names is similar to yours. I’ve crossed [name_m]Azriel[/name_m] off our list BC of [name_m]Azrael[/name_m]. We kept [name_m]Adriel[/name_m] on the list, though, if that is an option for you

I think [name_m]Azriel[/name_m] is a great name ! Other angel-themed names are never questioned, and in all actuality biblical angels are described as fiery masses with tons of wings and eyes, or other similarly monstrous characteristics. It has a more recent history of usage in fiction and people rarely link those characters to the angel of death just by name (see: the cat from the smurfs, and a character from the popular indie game undertale). I think it also fits in really well with your other children’s names.

According to wikipedia Azrael - Wikipedia , the connotations aren’t even very strong within religion. Maybe a few people would notice, but it’s a good name anyway.

Though that article did remind me, if you do choose not to use [name_m]Azriel[/name_m] for this reason, [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] would be a good similar sounding choice, also sorta well-liked recently. Or you could go with a different angel name, they all end similarly if you are looking for that sound with a different meaning.

I agree that most people would never find out about [name_m]Azrael[/name_m] being the angel of death. I think it’ll be fine.

It does suit your sibset well. I had no idea the angel of death had a name. Is this a common knowledge?? If not it won’t matter at all. Except for those who majored in theology or something.

It depends on the religion. [name_m]Azrael[/name_m] is considered the angel of death in Hebrew & Sikhism lore. I don’t know a lot about Sikhism, but [name_m]Azrael[/name_m] is not mentioned in the Bible (or the Tanakh, which is just the Old Testament portion and the primary text of Judaism). It seems that [name_m]Azrael[/name_m] is more a character of legend, separate to the religious texts.

I think [name_m]Azriel[/name_m] is bad ass. Very usable.

Personally the association of this name does not bug me at all. It’s mostly myths anyways. But, I also have Azarel on my list as well. I find it very charming and handsome name, Azarel [name_u]Ira[/name_u] is my combo.

I think [name_m]Azreal[/name_m] sounds great with [name_m]Jovan[/name_m] and [name_f]Phaedra[/name_f]… [name_m]Even[/name_m] though it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, it matches your style perfectly.

I think [name_m]Azriel[/name_m] is great with your other children’s names and I don’t think the similarity to [name_m]Azrael[/name_m] would cause any issues. [name_m]Azrael[/name_m] being the angel of death is not necessarily a bad connotation, but that depends on how you see and interpret death.
If you think the similarity is too much, I think that [name_m]Castiel[/name_m] and Umbriel have a similar feel.

In terms of the [name_u]Angel[/name_u] of Death, I’m not sure how many people would make the connection and even if they did whether it would hold any significance for them. Asriel’s a nice name, and I think it’s usable.

But at the moment there is a very popular game called Undertale in which there’s a character with that name. In reality I’m unusual about how popular it really is, but I’m aware the fandom has quite a bad reputation that’s generating a lot of hate. There’s nothing wrong with the game association per se (in fact it’s a pretty amazing game), but the fandom isn’t great. That being said, no one here has mentioned it yet, and I know a lot of people who are unaware of it, so most likely it’s really not a problem at all. I just wanted to give you a heads up in case, seeing as that’s my first association and it comes up almost immediately on Google too.

Your children’s names are wonderful by the way :).

Hello.

I am a lady, and [name_m]Azriel[/name_m] is my middle name. I am aware it is useable for either a male or female, and that it is similar to [name_m]Azrael[/name_m] - which can be negatively associated. But I very much like my name. So if you like it, use it =)

I think it’s a nice sounding name. I had no idea about the [name_u]Angel[/name_u] of death association. When I hear [name_m]Azriel[/name_m]/[name_m]Azrael[/name_m], I just think of Gargamel’s cat from The Smurfs!

I think it wouldn’t be that big of a deal.

Although [name_m]Azriel[/name_m] isn’t my personal style, I don’t think the angel of death connection will matter that much. It probably won’t come up that much.

[name_m]Jovan[/name_m], [name_f]Phaedra[/name_f] and [name_m]Israel[/name_m].
Why not keep it simple? The siblings names are recognizable and easy to spell. Why add a tongue twister now??
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you use nick names? If not, then maybe stick to a 2 syllable name again.
