I’ve posted a lot recently in my search. I feel like this middle name thing is a real struggle. My husband is a really different guy. we love science fiction and comic con. We consider ourselves super nerdy. As is our group of friends. A lot of the the friends we have with children have gone with a scifi inspired name. My husband really wants to do this well. However he picked [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] as our first name choice because we both just really like it. However every time I try to come up with a middle name He nixes it because he wants something unique and frankly a little weird.
His choices are
[name_m]Maddox[/name_m] G’Kar (after a character from the old show Babylon 5) (pronounced Jakar) I really don’t hate this I just worry its too weird. I also wonder if people will pronounce it wrong.
[name_m]Maddox[/name_m] Drax- (after Drax from Guardians of the [name_f]Galaxy[/name_f]) I nixed this because I don’t like [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] and Drax together
[name_m]Maddox[/name_m] [name_m]Mccoy[/name_m] (after [name_m]Leonard[/name_m] [name_m]Mccoy[/name_m] from star trek). I’m not a huge fan of the double M’s but its okay.
I picked [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] [name_m]Archer[/name_m] or [name_m]Arrow[/name_m] because we both like the show [name_m]Arrow[/name_m], but he won’t go for either of them. So my questions is are these too weird or is it okay since they are middle names.
I think G’Kar would be pronounced wrong which is a pet peeve of mine personally, but I think [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] [name_m]Mccoy[/name_m] is really cute! Other than the M’s the names are completely different, it won’t get pronounced wrong and isn’t too “out there”.
[name_m]Maddox[/name_m] [name_m]McCoy[/name_m] or [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] [name_m]Arrow[/name_m] would be my choice. [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] G’Kar and [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] Drax come across as dorky rather than nerdy. Let your husband name a pet G’Kar or Drax.
LOL we have lots of pets and they all have silly names ([name_m]Doc[/name_m] for doctor who, Neelix after the star trek character, [name_u]Loki[/name_u], after the norse god/[name_f]Marvel[/name_f] character). He won’t consider [name_m]Arrow[/name_m] unfortunately. I am working on it as it is my favorite. He might consider [name_m]Archer[/name_m] but clearly didn’t love it.
Out of your choices I like [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] [name_m]Arrow[/name_m] and [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] [name_m]Mccoy[/name_m]. Really dislike the spelling of G’kar but do like Jakar with [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] as well.
[name_m]Eero[/name_m] could be an alternative to [name_m]Arrow[/name_m] perhaps? Looks a lot more unique but sounds the same.
I also think G’kar and Drax are too weird. What if he grows up to be embarrassed by them? [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] [name_m]McCoy[/name_m] isn’t as blatantly obvious. The alliteration is quite cute in my opinion, and you could get your weirdness in a sly way.
I also like the suggestion of [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] [name_m]Eero[/name_m] as an alternative to [name_m]Arrow[/name_m].
I ran Eero by my DH he actually likes that less the Arrow. Which he said begrudgingly is growing on him. I think it is down to Maddox Arrow, Maddox Archer, or my husbands fav Maddox Mccoy. I figure he made me part with my first name choice of Killian because he didn’t like it with our last name so at this point I nixed some of his choices

From your list the one I hate the most is G’kar, sounds like a name you made up while drunk and I would have no idea how to pronounce it
My husband and I talked about naming a boy [name_m]Luke[/name_m] [name_u]Skye[/name_u] with my maiden name [name_u]Walker[/name_u], but because he has insisted on the hyphenated name it doesn’t work anymore.
There is a fine line with nerdy/geeky names. from your choices I would go with [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] [name_m]Mccoy[/name_m] or [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] [name_m]Arrow[/name_m]. not knowing your last name and which shows/movies you like I can throw out some suggestions but I don’t know if they’ll work.
I like [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] [name_m]Archer[/name_m] if your husband will go with it. Instead of [name_m]Mccoy[/name_m], have you thought about using [name_m]Leonard[/name_m], or even [name_m]Leo[/name_m], to get the [name_m]Leonard[/name_m] [name_m]Mccoy[/name_m] reference? I think [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] [name_m]Leo[/name_m] (or [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] [name_m]Leonard[/name_m]) sounds nice.
My personal fav would be [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] [name_m]Archer[/name_m].

I think [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] [name_m]McCoy[/name_m] is a great option. It sounds great, it’s nerdy without being overbearing and when paired with surname Kauffman it just sounds incredibly handsome. Also the alliteration makes it even more superhero style. I mean, [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_u]Parker[/name_u], [name_m]Matt[/name_m] [name_m]Murdock[/name_m], [name_m]Clark[/name_m] [name_m]Kent[/name_m], [name_u]Wade[/name_u] [name_m]Wilson[/name_m]… [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] [name_m]McCoy[/name_m] could be a superhero of his own.
I do think you should run pps’ ideas through your husband. There’s quite a few good options there
I think the middle spot is for whimsey. We chose family names for the middle but I think anything goes. Your child can opt to use it or not. If you are unsure maybe keep looking for something you both like.
I think [name_m]Maddox[/name_m] [name_m]McCoy[/name_m] is super cute and the perfect balance of nerdy while still remaining usable. G’Kar I don’t care for and will be mispronounced constantly and while I think Drax is usable I really don’t like it with [name_m]Maddox[/name_m].
There are a ton of cool ways to let our your inner geek while naming.
You and DH clearly don’t mind things that scream Comic-con. But there are other (more “traditional” options that might appeal.)
