How would you pronounce Arete?

Is it [name]Ah[/name]-reh-ta? [name]Ah[/name]-ree-tee? Something else entirely? I knew an [name]Arete[/name] growing up and she pronounced it closer to [name]Ah[/name]-reh-ta. I think it’s lovely pronounced that way but am unsure if that’s the “correct” pronunciation.

It looks lovely! At first glance, I would say ah-RET, but I really don’t know. I guess it would depend on which nationality it is. If it’s French, ah-RET would probably be correct, but if it was [name]German[/name], ah-ret-ah might make more sense. And ah-ree-tee would possibly make more sense if it was Greek? Unsure about that, though. Either way, I think it’s a great name.

Have you considered [name]Arietta[/name]? Sounds and looks similar to what you’re going for–said are-ee-ett-ah.

Good luck!

I might pronounce it ah-[name]REET[/name] or ah-RET. either way, I wouldn’t be sure of its pronunciation.

Since I’m used to Greek names that end in the e, all of those have the ee sound at the end ([name]Ariadne[/name], [name]Persephone[/name], etc), when I first say it I pronounced it ah-ret-ee. Nameberry says its a variant of [name]Aretha[/name] (ah-ree-thuh) and that leads me to believe it’s pronounced more like ah-ree-teh

[name]Just[/name] seeing it on paper, and being an American probably not well versed in names from other languages, my initial reaction was to say Are-eat. The ‘ete’ ending reminds me of names like [name]Pete[/name] or [name]Margarete[/name] which I would pronounce with an ‘eat’ ending.

Like arrest without the s

Having never seen it before I would pronounce it ah- reet.

I say it UH-rate like. I’m not sure how it’s really pronounced though.

My guess is ah-ree-tah, or something very similar, given the Greek origin of the name.

It reminds me of Arret, the French word for stop.

I would pronounce this [name]Ah[/name]-ret. I live in [name]France[/name] and this means stop or fish bones depending on spelling.

a-REH-teh

except it isn’t Spanish, so I really have no idea, that’s just how I’d say it instinctively.

Having never seen the name before I would probably say Ar-reet. Like [name]Pete[/name],as a pp said. But as with all names, pronounciation only needs to be corrected once, unless a person is set on being rude!

I would say Ar-reet. Sorta like [name]Arita[/name] without the ah sound (which, by the way, would make a lovely girl’s name as well).

My ex works for a company called Arête. It is French, & in English it’s pronounced “air-uh-tay.” I can’t for the life of me correctly pronounce it in French.

Here are a bunch of prn, I agree sounds too much like stop and fish bones.

It’s “ah ret” in French. http://www.forvo.com/word/arête/#fr, I believe you’re thinking of arrêté which sounds more like “ah reh tay”
