I stumbled across an old original character of mine that I had used for a long time and the name that had stuck with her is a made-up one of mine. I’m wondering how each individual pronounces it and if it sounds okay.
The name is Kiralia, nicknamed [name_f]Kira[/name_f]. With the recent birth of my cousin [name_f]Coralee[/name_f], I wonder if it sounds too similar as well. Considering I’ve bonded with [name_f]Coralee[/name_f] so much in the two months since she’s been born, more than with any of my other cousins, I’m just wondering if it sounds too close. Anyways, the main issue here is how you pronounce Kiralia on first glance. Thanks!
I would guess it would sound like [name_f]Keira[/name_f]-[name_f]Leah[/name_f]. However, I could also see it rhyming with [name_f]Azalea[/name_f].
I look at it and see [name_m]Keer[/name_m]-RAH-lee-uh
That’s how I pronounced when I first saw it.
I would pronounce it Kee-rah-lee-uh, and I don’t think its too close to [name_f]Coralee[/name_f], however, all I can think of is that [name_f]Kira[/name_f] is the Japanese word for killer.
Cool! [name_m]Keer[/name_m]-RAH-lee-uh is how I pronounce it. Thanks for the info!
keer-[name_m]AH[/name_m]-lee-ah was my first thought, but I could see [name_m]KEER[/name_m]-ah-[name_u]LEE[/name_u]-ah, too. It sort of reminds me of one of the regulars where I work–[name_f]Rosalia[/name_f]. We never know if it’s roh-ZAHL-yah or [name_f]Rosa[/name_f]-[name_f]Leah[/name_f].
As for too close to [name_f]Coralee[/name_f]–too close to use in a story, you mean? I don’t think so. The only time I worry about if a name is too similar to an actual person’s name is if a character is inspired by that person hahaha! I don’t think it’s a big deal at all.
I would pronounce it kee-RAH-lee-uh too. You may have more issues with spelling than pronunciation though- the pronunciation is intuitive by looking at it but there are a lot of letters that would make these sounds. It’s a lovely name though, feminine and modern and cool, unique and unusual but similar enough to more established names to be familiar. Kira is a great option for a more “normal” nickname if she wants one.
It’s a bit similar to Coralee as in I wouldn’t use Kiralia and Coralee for siblings, but for them to be your daughter and your cousin respectively I think it’s fine.
