How would you pronounce 'Marin?'

I really like the name [name]Marin[/name]. When I see the name, I pronounce it like [name]Karen[/name], but with an M as the beginning sound. [name]How[/name] would you pronounce it? I prefer the spelling [name]Marin[/name], as opposed to [name]Maren[/name]. I don’t want the type of name though where my daughter would always have to correct people when they say her name.

What are your opinions of this name? I’m not set 100% on this name- there are still other names that I am considering too.

Thanks for your help  I appreciate it!

It’s a lovely name. I had a classmate with this name who pronounced it like you do, so my first impression is to rhyme it with [name]Karen[/name]. Of course, now that I live in the bay area I am accustomed to hearing it with the stress on the second syllable. If you are near [name]California[/name] it’s probably more convenient to spell it with an e but otherwise the i should be fine.

I actually pronounced it MAHR-in
I’ve never heard it pronounced before…

I have a cousin named [name]Marin[/name] (MAHR-in) and knew an actress with the last name [name]Maren[/name] (rhyming with [name]Karen[/name]). I’ve also heard of it pronounced mah-REEN (as in [name]Marine[/name]/[name]Marina[/name]).

I think it’s actually beautiful both as MAHR-in and [name]MARE[/name]-in, but be aware that you will probably have to clarify your chosen pronunciation many times over.

I would just like to add that I grew up with a rather long, intimidating Italian last name. I had to correct people all the time, but it really never bothered me. It was a nice conversation starter most of the time. I liked how unique it was. Now I’m married and my last name is boring  I miss the intrigue my maiden had. I don’t see why a first name would be any different. Then again, mine is [name]Erica[/name]…everyone knows how to say that one.

I also have had to correct people on the pronunciation of my name for most of my life. It does tend to get old, but as long as people don’t insist on continuing to pronounce it wrong after I’ve corrected them, it doesn’t bother me.

I pronounce [name]Marin[/name] like [name]Karen[/name], too, as it’s how the Marins I’ve known have pronounced their names.

[name]Marin[/name] isn’t my personal style, but I think it’s really pretty. I think [name]Marin[/name] is different and elegant without being trendy.

Good luck!

I like [name]Marin[/name] when it rhymes with [name]Karen[/name]. muh-RINN as in [name]Marin[/name] County is pretty, but if she ever lived near there, it would be odd.

Thanks for your input. I live in Pennsylvania, so I don’t forsee the bay area pronounciation being an issue. I’m sure we will have to correct some people on how to pronounce her name. I just hope it’s not something that bothers her in the future. My brother’s name is [name]Hayden[/name]- he’s 30, so he had this name long before the ‘-ayden’ names became so popular. He always got a bit tired of having to correct people on his name, and tell them how to spell it.
We’ll see- I’m not due until [name]August[/name] so I still have some time to make a decision on her name (if it’s even a girl…we didn’t want to know the sex ahead of time). I’m sure I’ll post again soon asking for your thoughts on some other names! I love this site!
Thanks again for your thoughts!

Keep us posted, and good luck!

[name]MARE[/name]-in

personal adversion. its a place i know well.

I have a [name]Maren[/name] (pron. “[name]Mare[/name]-in”) and almost everyone pronounces her name correctly. If they don’t, it’s very easy to say “[name]Karen[/name] with an M”.

When I was researching the name, I was told to avoid the [name]Marin[/name] spelling because it can be pronounced both “[name]Mare[/name]-in” and “Muh-rin”, with the latter more common due to [name]Marin[/name] County, [name]CA[/name].

We get very positive responses to her name and we love it! It’s feminine, has a classic sound, and is unique without being trendy.

I have a cousin [name]Marin[/name] who pronounes it muh-RINN, like the county.

I would pronounce it like [name]Mare[/name]-in. I haven’t ever run into this name so I think this is a good idea of how people should pronounce it!
