How would you pronounce this and is it too complicated?

Ramayani.

Before you scroll down and read the options for how it is pronounced, first please say it out loud and decipher your own way of pronouncing it.
This is a Hindu girl’s name and is not verycommon in [name_f]India[/name_f].

Did you pronounce it:

  1. rama-YANee (rohmuh-YOH-nee) …as if these are two separate words, rama and yani smooshed together?

  2. ra-[name_f]MAYA[/name_f]-nee, (ruh-my-uh-nee) which rhymes and has the same accent on syllables as the Greek name [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]?

I ask because I discovered that [name_f]Indian[/name_f] pronounce it a bit more like option 1, which I really dislike.
And finally, how difficult of a name do you think this would be to have in the USA?

I pronounced it like [name_m]Rahm[/name_m]-ay-on-ee so option 1? I think it’ll definitely cause some confusion in pronunciation/spelling in the states and I wouldn’t use it if that will bother you. Your second, correct pronunciation, however, is quite beautiful and I think if the name has special meaning for you you should go for it.

I would pronounce it like the first one… [name_f]Rama[/name_f] and yani smooshed together. [name_m]Just[/name_m] like the way Ramayana (the great Hindu epic) is pronounced, but ending with -ni instead of -na.

I pronounced it a third way: [name_m]RA[/name_m]-my-AN-ee, but I like the way that sounds close to [name_f]Hermione[/name_f].

I pronounced it like rah-may-ah-nee >.>

I pronounced it rah-mah-yah-nee.

I pronounced it Rah-may-ah-nee first, but I think that people would catch on quick to your pronunciation.
I love it btw!

I had just read your previous post about this name and I thought it was lovely. I’ve never heard it before and wasn’t sure how to pronounce it. Oddly enough, I like both ways. If you like option number two, I say stick with it

I pronounced it rah-mah-YAH-nee.

Thanks for your replies, everyone.

So far, most people don’t pronounce it the way I prefer to. Coupled with the fact that I’m technically pronouncing it incorrectly myself in order to love it, I think the name has become too contrived and diffiicult for further consideration based on my personal criteria. It is already a complex name to begin with and I prefer names that are less complicated, even if they are made up/exotic.

The same thing happened with Sundari [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. I don’t mind altering spelling a bit if I like a name enough, but pronouncing it wrong in order to love it is just a bit much.

A similar thing happened to me for the name Shailu [name_f]Dawn[/name_f]. Husband insists he woul dpronounce it Shah-loo instead of shay-loo. At least with Ramayani he was willing to pronounce it wrong for me LOL.

I pronounced it rah-my-[name_m]AH[/name_m]-nee. [name_m]Ra[/name_m]-maya-nee is actually really pretty, but your daughter would constantly have to correct people how to say her name. Personally, as someone who has a yooneek name ([name_f]Erykah[/name_f]), it can be a little annoying but it’s fine.

Ramayani… I would say [name_m]Ra[/name_m]-muh-ya-nee.

I pronounced it like ram-ah-yar-nee

rah-my-YAH-nee. I’d pronounce Shailu “shah-loo” too.

Oh, I speak Hindi/am a Hindu

Rah-mah-yah-nee
if you have to ask if its too complicated then the answer is yes

I automatically thought Ruh-may-uh-knee

I pronounced it Raw-my-awn-eee and it makes me think of raman noodles.

this is how I said it too. I think it would be constantly mispronounced and misspelled, but that’s not always a bad thing. my name was never said or spelled right when I was a kid and it never bothered me

I didn’t pronounce it either way…

[name_u]Ray[/name_u]-mah-yawn-ee

It is quite complicated to me!

I pronounce it the same way.
