I’ve recently added the name [name_f]Cara[/name_f] to my list of names for a girl, however I would want to pronounce it “car-ah”. I know a girl with this name, spelled this way, who pronounces it “care-ah” but I’ve read that it can be said either way. I’m curious to see how all of you pronounce it with this spelling. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think there will be too much confusion? Also, what are your thoughts on the name and possible middle name suggestions? Thanks!
I know one [name_f]Kara[/name_f] and one Car a and they both pronounce their names as care-uh
I know to girls that are named [name_f]Cara[/name_f] and they both pronounce it Care-uh. You’d just have to train people to say it the other way, like [name_f]Clara[/name_f] Klah-ruh vs [name_u]Clare[/name_u]-uh, [name_f]Helena[/name_f] Hel-Ay-nuh vs [name_f]Helen[/name_f]-uh.
Maybe [name_f]Kara[/name_f] would be better. I know Maroon 5’s older band was [name_f]Kara[/name_f]'s Flowers, and they say it Car-uh.
I know one [name_f]Kara[/name_f] and one [name_f]Cara[/name_f] and they both pronounce their names as care-uh
I personally say (care- ah) when I see it since I have a little cousin named [name_f]Cara[/name_f].
I’m not a fan of K names and for whatever reason [name_f]Cara[/name_f] spelled with a C just seems softer to me. I have always had to correct people with my own name and I don’t know that I want to do this to my daughter. Thanks for your opinions! Maybe I’ll have to look for something else. Too bad my husband vetoed both [name_f]Cora[/name_f] and [name_f]Clara[/name_f] which are the names that led me to this one. Any suggestions for other two-syllable girly, yet not frilly, names?
I would pronounce it Care-uh. I think that is the vast majority, but there is a lady on the real housewives and her daughter pronounces it CAR-uh but I’m not sure how they spell it. The names nms but middle names I think anything would work, I would go for a longer name and not have it start with R.
I prefer the Care-uh pronunciation. I know a couple [name_f]Cara[/name_f]/[name_f]Kara[/name_f]'s, and they all pronounce it like Care-uh.
Not sure where you’re from or if regional accents may change the pronunciation.
Here in Australia, I know a few girls named [name_f]Kara[/name_f] and they always pronounce it cah-ra. Same with [name_f]Tara[/name_f] ([name_m]Tah[/name_m]-ra) and [name_f]Sara[/name_f] (sah-ra). From what I’ve seen on US TV shows however, it’s generally pronounced Care-ah (and Tear-ah etc).
I’d definitely default to cah-ra. But it could be an accent thing.
I default [name_f]Cara[/name_f] to car-uh and [name_f]Kara[/name_f] to care-uh. I think [name_f]Cara[/name_f]'s really cute and the pronunciation you want isn’t so wild or unexpected that people won’t be able to adapt.
But, if you really want other 2-syllable names with the same vibe…
[name_f]Brenna[/name_f]
[name_f]Kyra[/name_f]
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Lana[/name_f]
[name_f]Mira[/name_f]
[name_f]Esme[/name_f]
[name_f]Polly[/name_f]
[name_f]Maya[/name_f]
[name_f]Macy[/name_f]
[name_f]Anya[/name_f]
[name_f]Iona[/name_f]
It is perfectly acceptable to pronounce it either way.
I know more Care-uh’s but I wouldn’t be surprised to meet people who pronounce it Cah-ruh.
I pronounce it care-ah, rhymes with [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]. I do like car-ah and wish it was more common.
I myself say CAR-uh, as in drive the car.
I too pronounce it CAR-uh
I really prefer the sound like that. [name_f]Cara[/name_f] is gorgeous!
I know of a boy named [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] but it’s pronounced with the stress on the -li- part, oh-[name_u]LEE[/name_u]-ver and it’s strange but it sort of works (he’s named after his grandfather who pronounced it like that). [name_f]Cara[/name_f] pronounced CAR-uh is much easier to get used to, and people do get used to things like this. ^^
There’s a girl in my year called [name_f]Cara[/name_f], pronounced Car-a, and (I think) that’s how it’s usually pronounced in the UK, though that’s probably not much help. But at the same time there was a (British) woman called [name_f]Clara[/name_f] pn. [name_u]Clair[/name_u]-a on a TV show I was watching so I may be wrong. I’m not a fan of -air sounds in general, I can only really deal with [name_f]Claire[/name_f]. I find Clar-a, Tar-a (also a girl called [name_f]Tara[/name_f] in my year), and Car-a, so much prettier!
I have a cousin named [name_f]Cara[/name_f] (Car-uh) but I prefer [name_f]Cara[/name_f] (Care-uh). Almost everyone in the UK would say Car-uh.
Sometimes I think that accents can have a huge part in how you pronounce a name.
American accents (particularly from the deep south) would be more likely to pronounce it as Care-uh, but here in Australia, I’ve never even heard of that pronunciation. We only say Cah-rah, but probably due to our accents.
I automatically said CAR-uh, but if you wanted CARE-uh or CAR-uh, you’d simply have to correct those who said it wrong. [name_m]Both[/name_m] are pretty common pronunciation.
[name_f]Cara[/name_f] would be pronounced the same as [name_f]Kara[/name_f] around here. CARE-uh. That said, I do think it would be pretty easy for most people to adapt to the CAR-uh pronunciation since the word “car” is right there in the name.
I think it’d be easy to correct. [name_f]My[/name_f] sister is [name_f]Tara[/name_f] - tare-ah, but people say tar-a sometimes and it has never been a big deal.
