How would you pronounce this name?

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I have almost definitively settled on [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] for a girl. I’m just wondering how most people pronounce it: Be-AH-trix or Bee-trix (or something else)? I lean toward Be-AH-trix and I think most would do the same, but I’ve always been hesitant to choose a name with multiple pronunciations. It gets a little awkward when you can’t remember how the name holder prefers it to be said.

On another note, my husband likes the nn [name_f]Trixie[/name_f], while I prefer [name_f]Bea[/name_f] (Bee). [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think we could call her both, or will it more likely naturally progress into one or the other?

I would say BAY-ah-triks.

I think having two nicknames is no problem, although you in the end you might indeed only keep using one of them. But if you like to call her [name_f]Bea[/name_f] sometimes and your husband like [name_f]Trixie[/name_f], that could totally work.

I like the Be-AH-trix pronunciation more and that’s what comes to mind first but I also like the nn [name_f]Bea[/name_f] over [name_f]Trixie[/name_f]. When I hear the name [name_f]Trixie[/name_f] I think of horses (not to say that it isn’t a perfectly good nn, I just think of it as more of a pet name). If you end up using the Bee-trix pronunciation I would alter the spelling to make that more clear, otherwise you will get a lot of be-AH-trix on the first try.

I’d say BEE-uh-tricks!

I think it would be sweet for you each to have your own nickname for her :yellow_heart: whether or not that would morph into one nickname over time, I don’t know! She could even choose to use a different nickname when she’s older. But for now, I definitely see no problem with multiple nicknames!

I say it as bee-trix. I think two nicknames are fine to use, both may stick or one may become more used, we can’t really predict that

I say bee uh trix (but more like BEE uh trix). I think you can call her both, if he’s 100% of the time calling her Trixie and you’re 100% of the time calling her Bea it might be a bit odd but if she’s Beatrix with different pet names I think it’s totally okay

Be-ah-trix is how I say it. Bee-trix seems really strange.

I think you could call her both [name_f]Bea[/name_f] and [name_f]Trixie[/name_f]

Personally I prefer BEE-tricks but both are valid!

[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] is so gorgeous! Great choice.

I’m British and pronounce it BEER-trix (no R sound in my accent, just a long vowel like the one in “ear”). Basically BEE-uh-trix but it’s only 2 syllables when I say it.

That sounds way more complicated than it is, sorry :see_no_evil: I love the name and all the nicknames, and I think it’s fine for her to have a few nicknames, all of my kids have multiple pet names we call them. [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] could be another fun option for [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]!

Bee-Trix. The other pronunciation doesn’t seem intuitive to me.

I’ve only ever seen/heard [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] pronounced bee-uh-tricks! I didnt know people said bee-trix until nameberry! I suppose it depends on where you live.
I think both pronunciations are very similar though, so it doesn’t seem like a dealbreaker to me.
While [name_f]Bea[/name_f] (although I prefer [name_f]Bee[/name_f] personally!) is my favorite nickname for it, I think [name_f]Trixie[/name_f] is adorable too! You can definitely use both nicknames, almost everyone I know goes by multiple nicknames so it doesnt feel unusual to me!!

I think [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] is such a beautiful, sweet, spunky, magical choice! Congratulations!

I’d pronounce it kind of like beer-triks

I think you could call her by different nicknames. It might turn out one ends up suiting her more

I’d pronounce it BEE-uh-trix
If it can be condensed down to bee-trix, there is no way that the middle syllable is stressed. Unstressed syllables get dropped, stressed syllables don’t.
As for nicknames, the one that will stick is almost always going to be the one that she is called by the most, so it will be the one used by the parent who cares for her the most (as in time spent), which is usually the mother. In other words, you will (probably) win the war of the.nicknames if you agree to call her by both.

[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] is gorgeous! I’d instinctively pronounce it BEE-uh-triks unless told otherwise. I think using both nicknames is very doable and sweet, at least to begin with! Of course she may eventually choose one or the other that she prefers, but I think that’s part of the beauty of such a flexible name :yellow_heart:

I say bee trix (like [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] Potter).

I think you’ll end up using just one nickname as the go to, but we’re wow playful with my eldest and he has lots of silly nicknames we use in our silly moods.

I’m Australian and I say BEE-uh-trix. I love this name and, like you, prefer the nickname [name_f]Bea[/name_f]. I don’t think there’s an issue having two nicknames though. It is possible one will naturally overtake the other in usage but it isn’t a definite.

I personally pronounce it as BEE-uh-trix

With the nicknames, I think two nicknames are fine! Maybe one will stick in the future

Me too! It’s my daughter’s name. Sometimes I say it Bee-trix because I think it’s cute. She has lots of nicknames but mostly Bea and Bebe.

[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] is such a wonderful choice!

I say BEE-uh-triks, but I don’t think the pronunciations are all that different to cause a problem if someone says it the other way. I can’t imagine that would happen too often anyway.

I also think that using both [name_f]Trixie[/name_f] and [name_f]Bee[/name_f] is fine. I’ve found nns tend to happen organically, and might even change over time. So as long as you don’t hate either one or try to force it, it’s great!
