How would you pronounce this?

I saw on FB recently a classmate from HS named her baby girl Ghily. Not sure where she got it or if it might be a family name but it caught my attention. I’m not even sure how to pronounce it. I think [name_u]GILL[/name_u]-ee, maybe? Anyone know?

I think I would pronounce Ghily as [name_u]GILL[/name_u]-ee, as you do. Although on a second glance I think it might also be a more unique spelling of [name_f]Jilly[/name_f]?

I would also say [name_u]Gill[/name_u] ee but I could see it being [name_f]Jilly[/name_f]…

According to this it’s a boys name pronounced gill-ee ”

I would think of the [name_m]French[/name_m] name [name_f]Ghislaine[/name_f] and probably go for Zhee-lee (with the [name_m]French[/name_m] “J” and the “i” and “y” that sound the same, as in [name_m]French[/name_m]). But unless they are [name_m]French[/name_m]-speaking I doubt that’s the real pronunciation!

[name_m]Just[/name_m] googled it, and apparently there’s a kind of Irish dancing shoe called Ghillie (pronounced [name_u]Gill[/name_u]-ee), so I think I would pronounce it like [name_f]Lily[/name_f] with a hard “G” at the beginning.

Yes, I would immediately say [name_u]Gilly[/name_u], too. I agree that it must be a family name.

[name_u]Gill[/name_u]-ee I think there’s a character on Game of Thrones with that name.

I would also say gill ee
