How would you read IDRIS the first time you saw it?

I dont know how to do a poll so I’ll do it this way—

I have 2 questions

  1. When you first read the name [name_m]IDRIS[/name_m], did you read

A) Eye-driss

B) Id (as in kid) driss

C) E-driss

And
2) Which pronunciation to you prefer?

We have heard it all 3 ways --We live in Michigan, US–(where do you live?) So Im especially interested in hearing how my closer neighbors’ would read it on a class list or a roster—

Thanks so much for your input—

I read Eye-driss, but I prefer E-driss.

I have only ever heard the pronunciation ID-riss (the first syllable like kid).

I have a Welsh friend with the name and that is how he pronounces it.

I like “Eye-driss” pronunciation.

I say the “EYE-driss” pronounciation; I also pronounce it that way.

Oh, and I live in [name_f]Florida[/name_f].

I would say I-Driss at first look. There is a lady on youtube who is naming her son [name_m]Idris[/name_m] and she is pronouncing it i-drees (i like in kid and reese with a D)

  1. B. I read Id-Riss.
  2. A. It looks like [name_f]Iris[/name_f] with an extra D… So I’d prefer eye-driss

I’m from PA USA.

I read it as id-Riss as well. I am from [name_u]California[/name_u].

I would say id-riss with the ‘i’ like the one in kid. I live in the [name_m]Pacific[/name_m] NW.

[name_f]My[/name_f] first inclination was ID-riss, but any of those pronunciations seem plausible. This name is completely unfamiliar to me. I like in Kansas. I’m not sure which pronunciation I like best. Whichever one is correct, I guess LOL!

I’ve only known one and he pronounced it EE-dris. Until now, I’ve never thought about other pronunciations.

I say ID-riss, I think that is how the actor [name_m]Idris[/name_m] [name_f]Elba[/name_f] says it but I’m not sure. I have never heard it any other way

I say Id-riss (b), and this is the pronunciation I prefer. I’ve never met an [name_m]Idris[/name_m], so I’m not sure how most people pronounce it.

ID- riss- I know a guy with the name, and he pronounces it ID- riss. I kind of feel as if EYE- driss sounds more feminine.

ID(as in kid)-riss, but I’m in the UK and that’s how the actor [name_m]Idris[/name_m] [name_f]Elba[/name_f] pronounces it. I suppose it’s one of those names that changes with the accent of the area?

Nope there are only two correct pronunciations

ID-riss (Welsh) and id-[name_u]REES[/name_u] (Arabic).

I read it .(A …Eye-driss and I think it’s okay but I prefer .(C …E-driss. They are all nice though, and certainly unique as I have never heard either of the names. I live in [name_m]Perth[/name_m], Western Australia. Best of luck!

ID-riss - the Welsh way.

Never heard it aloud before, but I read it as and prefer “EYE-driss.”
