Hubby vetoed all the good names! :(

I had an awesome list for my hubby that I was super excited about and I’m left with three names I feel the most “eh” about. Those three names are [name_u]Elisha[/name_u], [name_m]Malachi[/name_m], and [name_m]Simon[/name_m]. I just dont feel like these are quite right and need new eyes to suggest more names.

Here are names he’s vetoed for one reason or another that I mostly like:
[name_u]Barrett[/name_u] - hubby doesn’t like that it’s a gun company
[name_m]Maverick[/name_m] - too cowboy
[name_u]Tate[/name_u] - too cowboy
[name_m]Reuben[/name_m] - like the sandwich
[name_u]August[/name_u] - just doesn’t like it
[name_m]Shepard[/name_m] - it’s a job
[name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] - last name
[name_m]Fletcher[/name_m] - last name
[name_m]Peter[/name_m] - doesn’t work with our last name
[name_u]Jameson[/name_u] - bad association
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m] - doesn’t work with last name
[name_u]Rhys[/name_u] - it’s a candybar
[name_m]Tobiah[/name_m] - doesn’t like [name_u]Toby[/name_u]
[name_m]Zane[/name_m] - bad association
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m] - bad association

Also, no names that end in s ([name_m]Silas[/name_m], [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], [name_m]Marcus[/name_m], [name_m]Lewis[/name_m], [name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m], [name_u]James[/name_u]) as it messes with our last name.
No nature type names.
No surname names.

For real, there are no other names left and I’m completely stumped. At least, this is how I feel :slight_smile:

That’s tough. I understand the frustration, haha.

[name_m]Elijah[/name_m]- really, really similar to [name_u]Elisha[/name_u] (if not the same, lol), but maybe you prefer it? The spelling?
[name_u]Elliot[/name_u]- could potentially be a last name, but it’s more of a first name so it should be okay.
[name_m]Dominic[/name_m]- same as above
[name_m]Josiah[/name_m]- similar to [name_m]Tobiah[/name_m], but without the [name_u]Toby[/name_u].
[name_m]Milo[/name_m]- short, like [name_u]Tate[/name_u], [name_u]Rhys[/name_u], and [name_m]Zane[/name_m].
[name_u]Barry[/name_u]- similar to [name_u]Barrett[/name_u], and a little more old fashioned, but still really cute.
[name_u]Zephyr[/name_u]- has the “er” ending, the “eh” sound, and the z from some of your options. Also has the interesting “hy” at the end, like the “hy” in [name_u]Rhys[/name_u].
[name_m]Jonathan[/name_m]- it reminds me of [name_u]Jameson[/name_u] kind of, and it’s long and has nickname potential ([name_m]John[/name_m], [name_m]Johnny[/name_m], and I’ve even heard [name_u]Joey[/name_u]?)

I’m sorry to hear that you are feeling so frustrated especially as you have some great names on your list. Here are some names that come to mind, are there any names your husband likes that you don’t to give an idea of his style?

[name_m]Elijah[/name_m]
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m]
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]
[name_u]Ryan[/name_u]
[name_m]Zack[/name_m] or [name_m]Zachary[/name_m]
[name_m]Zeke[/name_m] or [name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m]
[name_m]Jacob[/name_m]
[name_u]Theo[/name_u]
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m]
[name_u]Owen[/name_u]
[name_m]Euan[/name_m]
[name_m]Stellan[/name_m]
[name_m]Nathan[/name_m] or [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]
[name_m]Casper[/name_m]
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m]

[name_m]Soren[/name_m]
[name_m]Bennett[/name_m]
[name_m]Eamon[/name_m]
[name_u]Emmett[/name_u]
[name_u]Everett[/name_u]
[name_m]Edwin[/name_m]
[name_m]Griffin[/name_m]
[name_m]Graham[/name_m]
[name_m]Grant[/name_m]
[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]
[name_m]Roman[/name_m]
[name_m]Louis[/name_m] (loo-ee)
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]
[name_m]Austin[/name_m]
[name_m]Abram[/name_m]
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m]

Instead of [name_u]Barrett[/name_u], maybe …

[name_m]Barrick[/name_m]
[name_m]Breck[/name_m]
[name_m]Beckett[/name_m]
[name_m]Barnaby[/name_m]
[name_m]Brock[/name_m]

Others…

[name_m]Merrick[/name_m]
[name_m]Soren[/name_m]
[name_m]Brooks[/name_m]
[name_m]Alistair[/name_m]

I think it’s his turn to do a list! Let him come up with some names that he likes - you never know, he could have some really good ideas that you love. I wouldn’t put names on your own list that you feel ‘eh’ about, either. It’s kind of misleading to give someone a list and then they pick three names they like off the list and you come back with ‘Oh I didn’t really mean those ones’.

the two names that come straight to mind are [name_m]Stefan[/name_m] or [name_m]Thane[/name_m]

The three that your husband is OK with are all Biblical names, is he just not telling you that he really likes that theme?
Other cool Biblical names:
[name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_m]Eleazar[/name_m] ([name_f]Elly[/name_f]-A-zar) or Elezar
[name_u]Azariah[/name_u]
[name_m]Simeon[/name_m]
[name_m]Hosea[/name_m]
[name_m]Moses[/name_m]
[name_m]Levi[/name_m]
[name_m]Pharaoh[/name_m]
Mishak
[name_m]Bartholomew[/name_m]
[name_m]Ezra[/name_m]
[name_u]Genesis[/name_u]
[name_m]Job[/name_m] ([name_m]Joe[/name_m]-b)
[name_m]Titus[/name_m]
[name_m]Gideon[/name_m]

Are there names he likes to give an idea of style?

My husband did pretty much the same thing, of my list of about 200 hundred names he thought maybe 10 were “ok” but on second thought he liked only 1. I was very disappointed for a while, we didn’t agree on any boy names, the one name he liked he only liked because that and a middle he liked that i didn’t honored both of HIS grandfathers. I don’t hate the name, it just doesn’t feel like it belongs to my son (he’s still kinda stuck on it but we’re in discussions). But anyway that’s my little commiseration…

What has worked for us is to look at the lists on Nameberry. He likes classic names, but also Scottish names, I like unusual but not made up names. So we googled Scottish names and looked at the lists, and wrote down everything that one of us liked, and the other thought was at least ok. We’ve been doing this on and off for weeks, then we found out the gender and had to get a little more serious about it. I do think your hubby should come up with a list though, and not a list of like 3, a list of 20 at least, but the more the better honestly. Or just have him go through a website and read to you any name he likes and you either veto or write it down.

It is stressful, probably the hardest part of this whole thing so far. We currently have 3-4 names (including the initial one) that we mostly agree on, though that one name is at the bottom of my list and the top of his. We will likely wait until we meet him to name him, though may get it down to 2 before the hospital. I did have a nightmare that hubby named him while I was sleeping in the hospital and didn’t even tell me until we got home.

Oh and names he might like…
[name_m]Ivan[/name_m]
[name_m]Jason[/name_m]
[name_m]Bernard[/name_m]
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m]
[name_m]Anthony[/name_m]
[name_m]Samson[/name_m]
[name_m]Aaron[/name_m]
[name_m]Adam[/name_m]
[name_m]Zachary[/name_m]
[name_m]Robert[/name_m]
[name_u]Wallace[/name_u]
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m]
[name_m]Alistair[/name_m]
[name_m]Marco[/name_m]

Here are some more:

Gideon
George
Benjamin
Ezekiel
Elliot
Julian
Timothy
Asher
Amos
Ezra
Simeon
Ephraim
Micah
Solomon
Jonah

I would definitely say that he needs to look through a book or website and come up with a list of at least 10-15 names that he does like if you haven’t already. Or just write one down if he already has names he likes. Then you can be the one to veto. But its easy to say no to everything. Make him come up with some ideas, then if you don’t like any of his either you can come up with more together.

Maybe he would go for a similar name?

Instead of…
[name_u]Elisha[/name_u] -> [name_m]Eli[/name_m], [name_u]Ellis[/name_u]
[name_m]Malachi[/name_m] -> [name_u]Micah[/name_u], [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m]
[name_m]Simon[/name_m] -> [name_m]Simeon[/name_m], [name_m]Soren[/name_m]

[name_u]Barrett[/name_u] -> [name_m]Beckett[/name_m]
[name_m]Maverick[/name_m] -> [name_m]Maddox[/name_m], [name_m]Mack[/name_m], [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m]
[name_u]Tate[/name_u] -> [name_m]Trey[/name_m] or [name_m]Troy[/name_m]
[name_m]Reuben[/name_m] -> [name_u]Rex[/name_u] or [name_u]Reid[/name_u] or [name_m]Eben[/name_m]
[name_u]August[/name_u] -> [name_m]Alaric[/name_m]
[name_m]Shepard[/name_m] -> [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] or [name_u]Shane[/name_u]
[name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] -> [name_m]Thayer[/name_m], [name_m]Thane[/name_m]
[name_m]Fletcher[/name_m] -> [name_m]Felix[/name_m] or [name_m]Ferris[/name_m]
[name_m]Peter[/name_m] -> [name_m]Paul[/name_m] or [name_u]Paxton[/name_u]
[name_u]Jameson[/name_u] -> [name_m]Harrison[/name_m]
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m] -> [name_u]Max[/name_u], [name_m]Mack[/name_m], Maxamillian
[name_u]Rhys[/name_u] -> [name_u]Reid[/name_u] or [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
[name_m]Tobiah[/name_m] -> [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] or [name_m]Josiah[/name_m]
[name_m]Zane[/name_m] -> [name_u]Dane[/name_u] or [name_m]Zeke[/name_m]
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m] -> [name_u]Jensen[/name_u]

Like others have said, it sounds like it’s time for him to make a list of names–with your turn to have veto power! It looks a little like you like contemporary surname-names ([name_u]Tate[/name_u], [name_m]Maverick[/name_m], [name_m]Fletcher[/name_m]) and some underused classics ([name_m]Peter[/name_m], [name_m]Reuben[/name_m]), while he likes antique-y Biblical names that are in use, but not in the top 100–or at least, those are the themes I’ll try!

[name_m]Ezra[/name_m]
[name_m]Asher[/name_m]
[name_u]Elias[/name_u], [name_m]Eli[/name_m]
[name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m] ([name_m]Zeke[/name_m])
[name_m]Miles[/name_m], [name_m]Milo[/name_m]
[name_m]Abel[/name_m]
[name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_u]Seth[/name_u]
[name_m]Roman[/name_m]
[name_m]Malcolm[/name_m]
[name_u]Blaise[/name_u]
[name_m]Gideon[/name_m]
[name_m]Patrick[/name_m]
[name_m]Grant[/name_m]
[name_m]Bennett[/name_m] (if he vetoes that on the grounds that it’s a last name, tell him it’s the old-fashioned English version of [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] that became a last name!).
[name_m]Isaiah[/name_m]
[name_m]Josiah[/name_m]
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m]
[name_m]Levi[/name_m]
[name_m]Julian[/name_m]

A timeless classic with several nickname options might also work as a compromise between your two styles–[name_m]Alexander[/name_m], nicknamed [name_m]Zan[/name_m]/[name_m]Zander[/name_m]; [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m], nicknamed [name_m]Thane[/name_m]; [name_m]Dominic[/name_m], nicknamed [name_u]Nico[/name_u]; [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] nicknamed [name_u]Jamie[/name_u], or something else along those lines.

He seems to like Biblical names?

[name_m]Maverick[/name_m]: [name_u]Merritt[/name_u], [name_m]Merrick[/name_m]?

[name_u]Tate[/name_u]: [name_m]Teague[/name_m], [name_m]Gage[/name_m], [name_m]Cale[/name_m]?

[name_m]Reuben[/name_m]: okay, I hate to say it, but his concern over the “sandwich” association with [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] is legitimate. We named our son [name_m]Ruben[/name_m] - even opting for the alternative spelling in an effort to sidestep misspellings and sandwich jokes - and we still get them constantly. I really didn’t think the name was so uncommon, or the sandwich so popular, that we would hear about it as much as we do, but it is a drag. It bugs me so much that I’ve even considered changing his name before he’s learned it (he’s only seven months old), but I’m just steeling myself and hoping the jokes stop as he gets older. I think people are much more prone to commenting on a baby’s name than an older child’s or an adult’s. Rant over - just wanted to share our first-hand experience. [name_m]Rufus[/name_m], [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], [name_u]Robin[/name_u], [name_m]Eben[/name_m]/[name_m]Ebon[/name_m]?

[name_u]Jameson[/name_u]: [name_m]Jeremiah[/name_m], [name_m]Jeremy[/name_m], [name_m]Jerome[/name_m]?

[name_m]Magnus[/name_m]: always strikes me as Scandinavian, so how about [name_m]Bjorn[/name_m], Esben/[name_m]Espen[/name_m], [name_m]Lars[/name_m], [name_m]Ulrik[/name_m] (I can’t be the only one who thinks “[name_u]Uli[/name_u]” is adorable/cool) or [name_m]Viggo[/name_m]?

[name_m]Tobiah[/name_m]: could [name_u]Tobin[/name_u] work? It’s shorter than [name_m]Tobiah[/name_m]/the same length as [name_u]Toby[/name_u], so it might not get shortened as automatically…

Best of luck! It can be hard narrowing it down and agreeing. You’ll get there eventually, one way or another!
