Hugh or Hugo?

I like [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] more overall, but it’s very tough to pair with a middle name (let alone finding a combo that I love). There’s also the issue of having [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], which is one-syllable, with a one-syllable last name. Looking for some general opinions here:

Would you…
• Go with [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]
• Go with [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
• Scrap the name altogether?

Comments on what you think of [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]/[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] are appreciated, if you have any thoughts. Thanks!

For the syllable issue, it would be helpful to hear your last name to try it out, although I understand if you don’t want to post it! Both names are great, but I really love [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]. I’d use it as a first name if my husband was on board, but alas will have to settle for middle name status.

For some reasons I never like [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], but I always adore [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]. [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] sounds younger and more… alive to me, [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] seems old and boring. No offense to anyone named [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], it’s just I have a bad association with it.

I’m going to have to disagree with the other two replies. I think that [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] is very nice sounding, and less likely to get teased. I don’t know, [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] just seems very informal. But I do like the quirkiness of it. The good thing about [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] is that [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] could be a great nickname, but the child would have the more professional, classic name of [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] to fall back on. As for the one syllable issues, I suggest finding a two or three syllable middle name. For example, just guessing a one syllable last name:
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] [name_m]Brown[/name_m]

I think alliteration always makes names flow better, so maybe depending on your last name, try to find a middle name with that same letter, as I put in the example.

Good luck!

I love both equally! I would preference one over the other depending on how it sounded with middle and surnames.

For example:

I prefer [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_m]Clark[/name_m] to [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Clark[/name_m] as I think the two syllable first name flows better with the one syllable surname.

That being said, I prefer [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Clark[/name_m] to [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_m]Bristow[/name_m] as I don’t like the the way the latter rhymes.

I think it all depends on which name you feel goes best with your surname.

Good luck!

I think if you really love [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], go for it, regardless of surname flow, and middles can take ages to perfect, particularly for firsts you love. I definitely prefer [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]. The ‘O’ ending adds a fun, playful, adventurous, youthful element, with a touch of mystery and to me [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] sounds so much better and more interesting than [name_m]Hugh[/name_m].

I adore [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], it feels much more modern and handsome to me, but [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] is a sweet name too. I think if it is the flow that bothers you, I’d go with [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] and nickname [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], because then you get the best of both worlds.

I love [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]. It sounds strong but also gentle, serous but not stuffy. [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] seems more juvenile and jokey. It makes me think of Dumbo the Elephant.

[name_m]Hugh[/name] works with a single syllable last name … just think of the actor [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Grant[/name_m]. As for middle names, I would go with a 3 or 4 syllable name. Something like :

[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Gregory[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Kensington[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]

What matters is how you feel about each. You said you like [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] more overall. It is much more important to adore a name than to have it flow well. Besides a one syllable first name with a one syllable surname can sound strong ([name_m]Clark[/name_m] [name_m]Kent[/name_m]). So I say go with [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]. In time you will be able to find a middle name you love.

Personally I love [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], not too fond of [name_m]Hugo[/name_m].

I think [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] could sound great with a one syllable last name. Handsome and to the point. I tend to prefer [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] myself, but I like [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] too!

I prefer [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], esp with [name_m]Felix[/name_m] and [name_f]Leonie[/name_f]. [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] works tho. I would avoid a J name… for some reason I always say [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] Jackman as Huge Ackman in my head!

Thanks for the answers everyone
